The week is just flying by, it's odd, I feel like time goes by much faster as an adult than it seemed to go when I was younger. It felt like days lasted forever when i was in high school and now it seems like a month is over before one even knows.

And yes I am still like Calvin waiting for my packages. Where is my beaniiiiiiie! And Calvin didn't even have on-line tracking to neurotically check.

In more happy news, Spinning Metallic Pinwheel smells just like a high quality lime soda on me. While I'd have liked the berry, lime soda==not bad and definitely an inventive scent! I am debating how I feel about Pink Flamingo It has a few notes that go all gross for a while but ends as a lovely pink frosting scent.

Recently, I've been learning about soybeans. I had thought since they were a bean, that they must grow tall and viny like peas or scarlet runner beans so I was very disappointed when mine stayed small and never did so much. But recently I went out to look at them and out of seemingly nowhere there are PODS ON THEM!! There were never any flower as far as I can remember, so I've no idea how these pods formed, but PODS!! So at this rate I will be getting my very own edamame! I need to transfer things to pots and should have today but I was feeling under the weather. *sighs*
For those who don't know, I've fallen into Black Phoenix Alchemy Labs pretty hard and have lately been obsessing about various oils. And of course since I am an awful person, most of the ones I want seem to be hard to find lol I've gotten lucky with a few and now own some bottles i love as well as back-ups of some of my favorites. I'm waiting on some more bottles, some of which I expect to end up in the sale/swap pile ;;_;; Berry Moon is supposed to be musky and Stinky smells like baby powder, neither is appealing sounding. *sighs*

In other news, we've been getting lots of CSA produce which means I've been cooking a lot more. I think my husband appreciates it, because he gets a home cooked dinner most nights now.

So what has been happening with the garden in the last month? )
First... Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] kellyhime!

Second.. Basara 11+12 were finally subbed and I am not sure which attack filled me with more glee, Date's "War Dance" or Sanada's "Wings of Suzaku" Also Koujirou x Akechi would be so hot. XD;;;

Third... it seems woodchucks do not like basil. Everything else has been munched on in the last week except the basil.

Fourth... You know you want to see picture of my garden )

Grrrrrrr

GAH! One of the lectures I most wanted to go to is at 11 and there is no way I can get to the Botanical Garden by 11 when I don't even know where my Mom is, but urban chickens ;;_;; Maybe when they do programs at the end of the summer they will offer it again. But let's see there is still a talk on canning, free food samples, and I can maybe make it in time for heirloom tomatoes. At the very least I would love to do the lecture on planting your garden in September since I would love to know what can be Fall planted. I still need to share pictures, my peas and green beans are still being prolific and I've replanted some of the patches.

Animals in my mother's yard have eaten nearly everything I planted there. Or well, they left the actual radishes, just not the greens and the carrots and onions might still survive but everything else seems gone. I have the fence now but this is still going to suck.

In other news I hate Adobe. I misplaced my registration code from 4 years ago for Fireworks and can't remember if I bought it as a download or as a hard copy so my $350 program is now completely useless because the company refuses to believe I actually bought it. This is completely ridiculous. No wonder people just download pirated copies from China with the codes broken. ~.~ If you can't actually use the software you paid for because you misplaced a code.

GRRRRR
Ganked from many people on my flist...
If there is one person or more on your friends list who makes your world a better place just because they exist and who you would not have met (in real life or not) without the internet, then post this same sentence in your journal.

Also ganked from lots of people on my flist...

List 10 or so.. of your favorite characters from different fandoms, and ask people to spot patterns in your choices, and if they're so inclined, to draw conclusions about you based on the patterns they've spotted.

Code Geass - Suzaku Kururugi
Gundam 00 - Saji Crossroad
Yu-Gi-Oh The Abridged Series - Marik Ishtar
Sengoku Basara - Sanada Yukimura
CCS (and prob Tsubasa as well) - Syaoran(s?)
X - Kamui Shirou, and Yuzuriha Nekoi
Prince of Tennis - Fuji Yuuta
Gundam Seed - not Destiny since I don't really like anyone in actual Destiny Kira Yamato
Clamp Campus Detectives/20 Mensou - Akira Ijyuin
Princess Tutu - Fakir

Personally, I don't think it's that hard to see the connections, but that could just be me.

Things have been busy here. I managed to injure my hand in CA and I've had some unpleasant adventures with trying to get my car fixed and inspected. ;;_;; I have been taking garden pictures but have not been good about editing them. It makes me think I need a Flickr account just to make the uploading easier. >>; The green beans and scarlet runner beans are doing amazing and I'm excited to be eating fresh and local produce finally. I also now own my own dehydrator. It is made of win.

Other thoughts...

Does anyone on my flist know how to rip a R2 DVD onto your hard drive? I want to convert it to some other formats so I can share if with those people who do not have code-free DVD players. namely my in-laws

I'm addicted to The Comics Curmudgeon thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ee970

watched the last episode of Basara raw )
The bagels turned out surprisingly good, though I think next time I need to bake them longer to make the outside crisper. The inside had the right texture though which is a major accomplishment. I also baked some cookies.. because I needed cookies.

I harvest my first cauliflower head! I forgot to cover it so it did not blanch properly and I will need to be more careful with the newest head. It tasted fine cooked but was a little mealy raw.

Cookie and Basil have a vet appointment later today. Shhhhhh don't tell them.
Most of the seeds I am soaking are starting to sprout. The problem, I didn't write down what everything was because I thought I would remember and now I've not. I know the dish that is not sprouting has to be Peppers, Eggplant, or more Tomatoes, but which of the 3.... Hopefully I can make some of them sprout because once I get seedlings I am better at figuring things out. Though I was getting my carrots confused with my fennel >>;;;;

Today was a day for experimenting, as such I joined Facebook, so anyone who wants to be my friend there, let me know your id and I will friend you. I am determined to get more friends than my husband who is currently beating me by a lot. ;;_;; And even more daring I'm trying to make bagels from scratch! The easy part is the dough, the hard part is the boiling and then baking. I'm really hoping some of these are edible considering how it is going to suck to clean up the cookie sheets. I probably need more cookies sheets. On the baking front, I also recently made the most luscious chocolate pudding and some awe inspiring cheesecake. The cheesecake was particularly impressive since I managed to realized after I bought the cream cheese I had nothing to make a crust, so made vanilla wafers. lol

I need to take pictures of my garden, the tomatoes hate the wind but the peas and beans are going like gangbusters and my cauliflower is finally looking like cauliflower. YUM!
and we had a lovely time. I got to see quite a few old friends and enjoyed the fact that Oberlin has really upgraded its dinning options. It's not NYC or SF, but way cheaper than both and now there are actual real restaurants. The dinning service catered food still needs improvements despite a new company interested in local produce taking over. The only true stunner was a simple salad with feta, something I normally would avoid like the plague because most feta is way too salty for me to touch.

Speaking of food, TGiF should stand for Thank God it's Fried. ~.~ I swear it seemed like everything on their menu was at least 1800 calories and had been fried for a minimum of 5 minutes.

The Millennium is still the greatest coaster in the world and I can't believe the Magnum is 20 years old. Some of the other coasters gave me headaches. I can't decide if it is because I am old or I was dehydrated.

The garden has taken off while I was away and my tomato seedlings are now 4-5 inches tall. I'd plant some of them but my mom is worried she has deer and I want to own some solutions before I plant my babies. The peas are loving their fence and my beans are climbing it too and making me realize I need to order more. I still can't tell if 3 plants are beets or chard though lol

Happy Belated Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] jusrecht and anyone else I might have missed while away and Happy Early Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] muscatlove since the next two days promise to be busy.
So Far BPALs Planting Moon is a complete bust. I think it is the Geranium, and of course I bought 2 bottles of it which I now need to trade or sell. I'm incredibly impressed with actual plants now. Last year we had two shrubby bushes pulled out from the front of the yard and the whole area re-done. I felt bad to think I was going to lose the 4 Stargazer Lilies that had been near those bushes, but it seemed a small loss to get blueberry bushes (which BTW HAVE FLOWERS ON THEM!!!) But I was shocked to returned from Japan to find the lilies poking up out of the ground! In other tales of amazing plants, it appears that a lettuce also survived the Winter along with the one Arugula and the Cauliflower and I also found what might be a baby Cilantro and some beets from my last time planting.

I also hate Hoary Vetch and I think that, the mint and the Not!Arugula are my mortal enemies though the Vetch is my fault while the other two came with the house. ~.~

And now for a little poll fun...

[Poll #1397297]
Since the weather had improved I finally got out and planted some seeds in the vegetable garden. I really wanted to work on the sides of the house but we're still having some construction done and I would hate to lose any seeds I've planted. The soil has also been packed down into a hard nasty mess and I know it will hurt my back to try and dig it up. I'm hoping either my husband really does get us a tiller like he said, or to talk the house people into digging it back up when they're finally done. I eventually want to look into making a separate blog just for gardening and preachy posts since I doubt most people on my flist want to read about such things.

4 of the 5 new hydrangeas survived the winter, the 5th only died because I hadn't realized the house people planned to dig up the place it was located. The two older hydrangea from the first 4 are also both alive and budding. For anyone curious, the newest projects involve: more insulation and better drainage. We use to get water in the basement all the time. To make things even more fun the gas/electric company has been digging up the road outside our house to replace mains. So I'm having both types of work done around my house at the same time and last week or so, I was cleaning the inside of my house for Passover, fun!

So yesterday, I started planting seeds. I can't plant the squash outside yet because the temperatures are still too crazy but when I get back from Japan they are going in and possible edamame. I know where I want to plant them and hopefully I can start some of the herbs then too because I want more cilantro and basil and I want to do some peppers and eggplant as well.

As of now, I have a lovely crop of garlic that all seems to be coming up. I ought to get a picture of it, it looks like the greens from the bulbs it is. The blueberry bushes are starting to leaf and I really want to get some more planted at my Mother's or possibly in the backyard. We shall see.

I'm soaking 7 different types of tomato seeds as I am curious which will do the best and taste the best. Currently we are trying: Oregon Spring (1S), Stupice (2R), Pink Brandywine (3L), Cherokee Purple (4R), Moskovich (5L), Amana Orange (6R), and Silvery Fir Tree (7L)

I want better labels so I can know what I planted where and know what specific types of things I planted. I need to refind my information on slow bolting lettuces for the summer since I like eating greens. So far I know I planted: NY Early Onions, Ailsa Craig Sweet Onions, All Year Round Cauliflower, Arugula, American Spinach, Bloomsdale Spinach, Scarlet Nantes Carrots, Japanese Imperial Carrots, some type of lettuce (this is when I wish I wrote things down ;;_;;) Provider Green Beans, Sugar Snap Peas, French Breakfast Radishes, Chioggia Beets, and Scarlet Runner Beans.

Today I want to get some potatoes planted (in the place where next Spring I am so doing Asparagus crowns or berries) and probably more carrots. I'm trying to plant based on what we are going to eat. I'm going to get a lot more experimental with my planting at my mother's once the soil is ready to go. It's actually all very exciting!
First, apologies to [livejournal.com profile] jusrecht I thought I had read your last Geass fic but I realize now I've not. I hope to get to it later this week end because Suzaku is still my big anime/manga love.

Speaking of Suzaku, i bought some of those new cute notebooks that came out for Geass at Animate. You actually get 2 per set and I of course bought Suzaku and Gino. Gino's consist of his calendar picture on one and the second says "Knight of the Three, Knight of the Six and Knight of the Seven" and shows that famous picture of him hitting on Suzaku. lol Suzaku's two consists of his calendar picture and a second one that says ZERO, shows lots of Zero masks and has him and Lelouch in their calendar outfits facing away from one another. A part of me is amused and wonders what the Lelouch one says now.

I have been reading up on Spin Farming. Spin farming involves turning small spaces of land into area to grow crops for fun and profit. At the moment, I'm looking at my parent's side yard since it has: good water, lots of sun, and nothing but weedy grass there right now. I could easily make it there every day and for breaks I can use the internet at my mom's XD;; The big thing is while I like planting seeds and weeding I am not quite so fond of prepping the soil ahead of time. I wonder if there is anything I can get to cheat to help me dig up the weedy grass.... I know the soil will need a lot of compost since it currently sucks and really that is the biggest part of growing things, decent soil! I also want to get a soil PH tester. I think it would come in handy. Spin is actually about making money so if all goes well I shall have a part time job as a farmer soon, lol Yeah I know sort of weird, but if I'm not going to do anything related to my education, why should it not be something where I can make my own hours and schedule and set my own pace. I will have to invest in some more sun hats and sun screen. Supposedly one can actually make 20-30k selling produce at Farmer's Markets and I have my eye set on one already. Plus I can sell handmade baked good along with veggies and well... I always wanted to sell things I've baked. And yes, I know it is a lot of work, but I also think it can be very rewarding. There is something wonderful about seeing things you've planted come up!

I also want to look into getting some of those tunnels so I can get the hardier greens through out winter.

My other farming thought is... I am looking into chickens. Now before you tell me how bad chickens smell that is because 1) generally that involves a lot of chickens and 2) they are generally confined to very close quarters. It seems if you clean their poop out once a week there shouldn't be a smell and chicken poop is of course a great fertilizer. And I would get eggs! I would have just hens, though sadly that means no chicks. Now of course the issues I am already thinking of 1) can you keep them in a coop outside over the winter without them freezing to death. I am thinking yes but I sort of need this confirmed. 2) what do I do with the chickens when they're too old to lay anymore... >>;; 3) what would the neighbors think? I'm thinking of trying to get them for my mother's yard first. I've been looking at a website all about having chickens in NYC. They also offer classes in canning *______* I know chicken coops are illegal in Boston, but they are allowed in NYC so hopefully they are legal here, I just need to start checking.

One thing I will need to do is name my potential farm, so...
[Poll #1353128]
Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] bittenbefore

It made me feel sort of sad to wake up this morning to no new episode of Code Geass. It's odd, I had sworn not to download the raws since the subbed episodes would come out only 4-5 hours later but in the end my love for the characters and story had me downloading both. I wish I knew how to make AMVs. I'm still coming to terms with both the fact Geass has ended and the ending itself. It's sort of funny. Oddly, RPing a bit helps.

I also had a lovely idea for a fic and I had the start planned out in my head and with my cold I managed to lose it. Hopefully, I can figure out a tack to take since I'd like to write some more again.

I need to stop thinking "Who Am I?" is a Suzaku song and stop searching Japanese websites for amusing fan-art. >>;;

In other news, I have an awful cold and it is making me miserable. I lost my voice for a few days and now I'm just coughing and suffering from a runny nose. Meh. I have a ton of garlic to plant tomorrow and I really need to start on bulbs. I also want to order my hydrangea so they can come and I can get them in the ground before I leave for Japan. At least the weather is chilly so working on the garden is not unpleasant.

We're going to try to plant a cover crop this year but I'm not overly excited about it since the squirrels have been digging up seeds. I also seriously need to think about what needs to be done before I go to Japan. I know I want to look into getting a second battery since the one on my laptop only seems to last about an hour now ~.~
One can't change the past and so its important to always work and hope for a more positive future.

So with that note...

The most amusing thing from my time in Utah. XD;;

A few pictures from Zion with and without the Geass Yos )

And some garden pictures )

And cause I suck one more uncut picture. :P

My harvest for today from my garden! :D I grew the radish, arugula, and beans from seed. The basil, cilantro and tomato are from seedlings. But still, go me! :D
So before I get dressed and head over to the DMV.. I thought everyone might enjoy a few pictures of my yard so you could see what my neighbors were complaining about. lol

I'm also prob going to be doing a LJ flist cut before I go out to Utah.

I knew yesterday there were other belated birthdays I was missing, so Happy Belated Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] hinoai, [livejournal.com profile] bramblyhedge and [livejournal.com profile] kimber_rose and if I forgot your birthday and you're not on the list.. uhh sorry ;;_;;

This summer has been a little pre-occupied. >>;

So since I don't want this to be a completely useless post. I'm still waiting for NY State to get the info so my scooter is legal ~.~ And we're still being bounced around by the city re: our garden. Both are a tad frustrating. *sighs*
The little old people across the street from us with too much time on their hands have tried to turn us into the Housin Code Enforcement Office. Again. ~.~ First they made trouble for us when our front door went, then when the grass got too long because we were away and now because we're trying to turn our front yard into an urban garden. ~.~ Seriously, it doesn't look bad. I don't get it. I'm seriously hoping there is nothing they can do about it but I don't trust the damn city. ~.~ I'm also worried they will bitch about the house no longer being stucco. God, sometimes I hate bureaucratic red tape like this. It serves no purpose. I also think my neighbors need a new hobby besides being assholes. ~.~
It's March, the time of year when a girl's heart turns to... gardening. I am determined to actually get more than peas from my garden this year and part of that involves actually planting things when you're supposed, namely in the Spring. While I have quite a few seeds stored away, I recently was sent a link to an Italian Seed Catalog and to Johnny's Seeds and I think I am in love. There are 6 different types of arugula, 6! I also wonder if these less heirloom seeds might be umm easier to grow. ^_^; My winter garden never got enough light to do much though I should point out it managed to not die for the most part, well except the basil. I'm not really won't to tear it all up so hopefully I will have some new boxes for spring since I want to try squash.

Our other yard problems involve the fact I couldn't get most of my bulbs in the ground because of the house stuff being done. ~.~ I am determined next year to get them in as well as new ones in case these are no longer among the living. I also need to figure out what to do with the new large open side patch next to the house that was formerly full of weeds, bushes, and God only knows what. I am not sure if my hydrangea are coming back but I am not planting more until the house is painted. I also now have a front yard heavily made up of mud from all the work done around the house. I'm thinking of actually planting clover rather than grass as grass I think is overrated. Clover smells nice, has flowers, and supposedly makes a wonderful green mulch.

Thank you everyone for all the lovely comments re: my Japan pictures. I do have a few more to share, but I want to also make a thread on DoA/Resinality so I can show off Lux and whatever pretty blossoms we saw.

I'm also steadily thinking about trip #2 and will prob be bugging people for input in the next few days. ^^
I think I ought to be realistic and not plan on doing too much too fast. If I can actually get the first area planted, then I can always try to bulbs from the supermarket or elsewhere for the other side.

This is the are I want to put in tulips. We can't grow veggies here because it's too close to the house and the sills have lead paint in them. ~.~ One of the large green bushes is just an ugly bush and the other is a fuschia pink azalea. The red denotes my ever troublesome Tokyo Delight Hydrangea which just secretly hates me I think.

You can find all the tulips I am considering on the following website:
John Scheepers

[Poll #1062190]
After losing another 2 flowers (making something like 10 total) I decided to email my sister-in-law for any advice she might have on zucchini/squash plants. She explained to me that unlike tomatoes and peas and such, squash actually has a male flower and a female flower. Unless there are lots of bees or insects to help with pollination, you don't get zucchini. A bit confused by the male and female flower thing, I asked my sister in law to send me pictures and.. and... and... I am 99% sure all of my flowers have been male.

At least this means the flowers dropping is not a problem.

Some male flowers )
Today, I awoke to 4 zucchini flowers. I am really really hoping they don't die in the middle of the night. I have a lot of new pea flowers, which is good as I've eaten all the pods I have. I can't figure out if I have kale or broccoli rabe, though both are tasty. I really need to transplant some of the spices and just re-do some of the beds in the first box. Maybe tomorrow.
The garden as of a few weeks ago )
