Not that anyone cares..
Apr. 19th, 2009 11:28 amSince the weather had improved I finally got out and planted some seeds in the vegetable garden. I really wanted to work on the sides of the house but we're still having some construction done and I would hate to lose any seeds I've planted. The soil has also been packed down into a hard nasty mess and I know it will hurt my back to try and dig it up. I'm hoping either my husband really does get us a tiller like he said, or to talk the house people into digging it back up when they're finally done. I eventually want to look into making a separate blog just for gardening and preachy posts since I doubt most people on my flist want to read about such things.
4 of the 5 new hydrangeas survived the winter, the 5th only died because I hadn't realized the house people planned to dig up the place it was located. The two older hydrangea from the first 4 are also both alive and budding. For anyone curious, the newest projects involve: more insulation and better drainage. We use to get water in the basement all the time. To make things even more fun the gas/electric company has been digging up the road outside our house to replace mains. So I'm having both types of work done around my house at the same time and last week or so, I was cleaning the inside of my house for Passover, fun!
So yesterday, I started planting seeds. I can't plant the squash outside yet because the temperatures are still too crazy but when I get back from Japan they are going in and possible edamame. I know where I want to plant them and hopefully I can start some of the herbs then too because I want more cilantro and basil and I want to do some peppers and eggplant as well.
As of now, I have a lovely crop of garlic that all seems to be coming up. I ought to get a picture of it, it looks like the greens from the bulbs it is. The blueberry bushes are starting to leaf and I really want to get some more planted at my Mother's or possibly in the backyard. We shall see.
I'm soaking 7 different types of tomato seeds as I am curious which will do the best and taste the best. Currently we are trying: Oregon Spring (1S), Stupice (2R), Pink Brandywine (3L), Cherokee Purple (4R), Moskovich (5L), Amana Orange (6R), and Silvery Fir Tree (7L)
I want better labels so I can know what I planted where and know what specific types of things I planted. I need to refind my information on slow bolting lettuces for the summer since I like eating greens. So far I know I planted: NY Early Onions, Ailsa Craig Sweet Onions, All Year Round Cauliflower, Arugula, American Spinach, Bloomsdale Spinach, Scarlet Nantes Carrots, Japanese Imperial Carrots, some type of lettuce (this is when I wish I wrote things down ;;_;;) Provider Green Beans, Sugar Snap Peas, French Breakfast Radishes, Chioggia Beets, and Scarlet Runner Beans.
Today I want to get some potatoes planted (in the place where next Spring I am so doing Asparagus crowns or berries) and probably more carrots. I'm trying to plant based on what we are going to eat. I'm going to get a lot more experimental with my planting at my mother's once the soil is ready to go. It's actually all very exciting!
