How does your garden grow?
Aug. 28th, 2007 12:17 amToday, I awoke to 4 zucchini flowers. I am really really hoping they don't die in the middle of the night. I have a lot of new pea flowers, which is good as I've eaten all the pods I have. I can't figure out if I have kale or broccoli rabe, though both are tasty. I really need to transplant some of the spices and just re-do some of the beds in the first box. Maybe tomorrow.

The peas, they're doing even better now, though they love the netting.

The tallest are sugar snap peas. I believe the next box is more sugar snap peas and finally British Wonder.

The other box, the giant plant in the back taking over is the zucchini

The zucchini and one of the tomatoes. The tiny little plant between them is my eggplant and there is also one radish that came up.

Important moral, zucchinis need a lot of space.

my 6 tiny tomatoes. I prob won't get fruit from them, but I figure everything i grow is good practice for next year!

Date: 2007-08-28 02:19 pm (UTC)The flowers need to be weeded, again, but I might put it off until Wed. since a lot of that area I plan to dig up in the fall and try to plant bulbs in. However all of the hydrangeas and the lilac I planted seem to be surviving and the bluebells and impatiens are doing surprisingly well. I think only the lilies of the valley I stole from my mom didn't make it.

Date: 2007-08-28 02:24 pm (UTC)The peas really really like the netting around the boxes, even more so than the strings they are growing around. This of course makes it hard to open the boxes to water them. ~.~ There is soe wrapping around one another, at this point I just want to try to encourage as many pods and flowers as possible. I would highly recommend the sugar snap, they taste delicious, the only negative is as you can see they grow really tall. The British Wonder is denser and shorter.
Yeah they kept talking about boxes and squares and I got confused. It seems a zucchini wants a middle square and you can plant the 7 outer squares, but hahahaha that is not what we did. Luckily the peppers and marigolds never came up so that is a few boxes near them. The one transplanted tomato is not doing very well and once it's tomato reddens it might come out. The other tomato seems to be doing better and the radish needs to come out soon.
I still want to try potatoes at some point. >>;
