So our Closing is April 26th and we have until May 2nd to be out of our house. This would not be so bad, except 1) We did not know this until the 14th 2) We have still not packed and 3) We do not have a place to move to. Realtor.com is evil and continues to list things that have deposits on them so that one has no idea that they're not really available.

On Tuesday I went to see: Towne Brooke Commons I'm not going to even get into the disaster that was our real estate agent, (She gave us the addy 5 Nabby Road, Danbury, when the complex was on 5 Nabby Road, Brookfield. However, there was another complex actually located at 5 Nabby Road Danbury which was nothing like what I wanted and she did not seem to realize there were two complexes at 5 Nabby Road. As a real estate agent she NEEDS to know this! ) Problem #1, crappy spacing, the condo apartments have ginormous bedrooms and closets but tiny living/dinning room areas. I'd rather have a smaller bedroom and a bigger Living/Dinning room area. Problem #2 They want $1000 non-refundable pet deposit (Yes, you read that right $1000 non-refundable pet deposit) along with an additional $70 per month for the fact we own cats. We're also not allowed to get a 3rd cat and should one of our cats pass away our new cat must be older than 7 months o_O; Problem #3 $300 for "amenities" which consist of a small pool, a clubhouse that is only open Business Hours and a tiny fitness room.

Luckily, yesterday I found a new agent and I might have found a potential place to rent assuming someone else doesn't beat us to it. I oddly discovered that there are definite pluses to ranches and things built post World War II after seeing an "antique" home built in 1795. All I have to say is, dirt floor basements o_O;

But hubby made me thankful because at least we are not living in Vancouver

Good luck with the apartment-hunt!

I remember the whole "monthly fees cats" was a major reason for why we ended up going with a condo rather than starting out with an apartment. One of the places we had been looking at in 2003 charged something like $50 per month per cat, on top of a non-refundable deposit!

I think the big bedroom/small dining room combo might be aimed at Hartford commuters who use the apartment basically just to sleep in, and do all of their dining and entertaining at restaurants or at weekend beach houses. Our neighbor was basically that type of commuter. Now that she's retired, she's trying to sell off her condo unit and live at her beach house full-time.

In Houston, I remember we paid a partially refundable deposit, but that was it. I had been looking more for a condo townhome rental, but the first agent had claimed this particular condo complex was "perfect" for us. It turns out I later found out from the new agent that is is currently illegal in CT to ask for a pet deposit. It can be gotten around possibly as an additional deposit fee, but it's not something you're supposed to do.

It's a really long commute from Danbury/Brookfield to Hartford, easily an hour and I can't imagine that the $1700 a month is such great shakes to make the commute worth it. It's 40 or so minutes to White Plains and Brookfield is really only close to Danbury which I just can't see as enough of a commuter location to make something like that worthwhile. Which might explain why the complex had not sold out. It seemed like it was something built in the bubble that was now having a problem as people realized it was overpriced.

Yeah, I'm not really sure where the anti-kitten bias comes form. I can only think that is is easier to make an anti-young animal rule than one that is dog only, since puppies are known to get into trouble.

I sort of want a pool, in all the cases the pool is far enough away from my personal unit that I'm not going to get any noise from it. I just think it would be nice to be able to take a dip during the day and might be feel comfy for my belly. Usually I think deposits are partially refundable, but this particular complex wants a non-refundable pet one, which is a huge turn off.

Yes, [livejournal.com profile] twotone shared that link! :D And so far the new agent seems amazing, it's more a matter of new places going fast and not as many listings as I would like right now. ._.

I think it's because there is the perception that animals are a liability even when they are not. It's really frustrating though. There were a bunch of other places I sort of liked but the owners were adamant that no pets were allowed and I'm not going to give up my kitties!

We have amazing credit scores, the agent made sure to get those before we looked at anything so that we were ready to go. I've not actually had the chance to meet any of the landlords and honestly, I'm not sure I have the time. ^^;;

Yeah, tell me about it, I was just in awe of how expensive Vancouver was. It makes me completely re-think the people who wrote Plenty

Eeeep, what a crappy thing to happen. All those rental property pet rules are insane, too. $1000 non-refundable?! What do they think a kitty cat is going to do - burn the house down?! @_@;;; Good luck, anyhow, I hope you can find a place soon.

Thanks, we put in a deposit with the place I like best on Monday but 2 other people also put in a deposit there as well so now it is a matter of waiting and hoping. *sighs* I am not sure what we will do if this place falls through.

*hugs* The new agent seems a lot more competent, she gets back in touch with me faster, had us do a credit report from the start, and actually made us sign legal documents explaining what an agent does.

Right now am resting after trying to get out a ton of recycling from the house.
