Testing 1 2 3
Apr. 14th, 2010 07:33 amI am sure by now many people are sick of my pregnancy ramblings, but oh well.
Yesterday, I was checking the cell phone to try to track down my new real estate agent to find a place to rent (which was such a disaster ;;_;; ) when I discovered a message from one of my doctor's offices. I thought I wasn't going to be getting any results until later in the week or that they would call the home # which is why I'd not checked earlier. But no, they'd finished the blood work for my Nuchal and... my chances of having a baby with birth defects are now even less likely than a 20 year old woman. For those who don't know, I am on the older side, and in the past, someone like me would be forced to have an amniocentesis. Beyond the fact that it involves having a needle stuck into your very pregnant belly, it also gives you a 5-10% chance of having a miscarriage. (vs. my risk of birth defects without any other testing is only about .5% ) The majority of miscarriages happen very early in a pregnancy, usually before week 6. (So you barely know you're even pregnant!) After you're out of the first trimester something going wrong drops enormously since the baby is really semi developed, has a beating heart, and is already more than 2 inches from crown to rump. Recently, instead of amnios many women now have a Nuchal Translucency. It is not as accurate as an amnio but is a heck of a lot less invasive. A fancy sonogram is done, and they measure some fluid around the back of the baby's neck. Anything 3 and above is bad. They also then take blood and look for other markers of possible chromosome defects. In a few more weeks I get some more blood work done and then there is one last fancy sonogram to really check things out. But the results of the first round are extremely good and it looks like Ryuu-chan is healthy and progressing normally. It's funny but knowing my baby is doing well, makes all the morning sickness seem worth it.
And finally... a poll. Several caveats about this poll, just because a name gets a lot of votes does not mean I am going to use it, feel free to suggest a name however it must meet certain criteria listed below: Please nothing completely ridiculous, I'm not naming a baby: Megatron or Schneizel. :P I HATE the trend of WASPy last names for first names. Things like Addison and Madison makes me want to break things. I also won't consider names in the top 50 most popular names since I don't want my child known as Abigail K
I'm Ashkenazi Jewish so it is traditional to name your children after dead relatives. It is also traditional not to use a name already in use by another family member. I have the following letters available to me:
A (off limit names: Anne/Ann and Ari)
E (off limit names: Emily)
L (off limit names: Laura, Leah, Linda, and Lucas)
M (off limit names: Megan, Michael, and Miriam)
S (off limit names: Sara/Sarah, Sharon, and Shoshonah) (Edit and Samuel is out! Gah!)
V (off limit names: nothing)
W (William and Willow)
Note: Yes, I have talked to my husband about all these names, and for the most part he doesn't think any of these are that bad, (Azalea is his least favorite) but has no particular favorites. For those curious, Aya is a Hebrew name actually meaning bird-like.
So....

Date: 2010-04-14 12:15 pm (UTC)Elijah is in the top 50 most popular boy names. I won't use a popular name. My siblings and I spent way too much time being known as our first names last initial. to distinguish us from all the other people who shared the same first name as us.

Date: 2010-04-14 12:22 pm (UTC)It was scary how many there were but no sons named Lelouch for me lolBut I know a few people in their 50's/60's with that name and it's just one you don't hear as often anymore, which makes me like it. :)My husband's grandmother was Vera, which isn't really to my taste but Verity and Violet I thought were quite pretty. Violet isn't super popular but parents are using it now. I know someone whose children are Ethan and Violet. Verity I've not yet really seen on lists which makes it even more appealing. I first heard of the name in a British romance series from the 70's. I thought it was very pretty and different.
At one point I was considering Alice, but I am expecting that to make a huge comeback with the movie and one of my real estate agents is named Alice and I've been finding her rather frustrating lately.

Date: 2010-04-14 12:52 pm (UTC)Dislike Louisa, but that's because that is my own middle name (AND my mother's AND my grandmother's AND my great-grandmother's).
I always thought the name Lynette was pretty. I went to high school with a girl named Lynette. It also sounds good with Kold. I like Alice, too, and Josephine (sue me, I'm a Little Women fan). If Bob and I had children, we probably would have gone with Rosemary or Lily for a girl.
Boy's names...hmm, you know I'd suggest Raphael, but that's a bit too Catholic. Samuel is a nice name. Ephraim seems old-fashioned, but I think that's because I had some 19th century relatives named that! I really like the names Laurence or Sebastian.
So many interesting possibilities! Have fun choosing the one you like! What does Kennis think? (His name is rather unusual...)

Date: 2010-04-14 01:14 pm (UTC)I like Louisa because it seems so old fashioned lol Lynette could be interesting. I use to love Alice, but I am concerned with the new movie it gaining more fans and my real estate agent driving me batty is an Alice. But I still would probably consider it.
Josephine, Raphael, and Rosemary are out because I have neither letter. (and I hope I never have the option of using R ^^;;; cause that would be a tragic thing.) Lily is way too popular. It's in the top 25.
Samuel is out, oops, I forgot that is my brother's middle name. Sebastian is gaining a bit too much in popularity for my tastes but Laurence/Lawrence is a thought despite my hating "Larry" We're just not nickname people.
I actually like how old fashioned Ephraim sounds and the same with Solomon.
I confess I love thinking about names, it's been a hobby of mine since 1983. Kennis likes most of my choices so far, I think he is a little iffy on Azalea and Aya, but most of the others he likes. I am pretty sure he likes Ephraim and Solomon since they are good Biblical names. And yes, his name is super unique! We're an interesting combo, his very very unique name and my extremely common one lol It does help that his name is weird because it gives us a little more freedom since our child can be all, "I have a weird name like Daddy! :D "

With Louis they get a doll too XD; BlueFairy used Louis as the name for one of their molds.

Date: 2010-04-14 07:35 pm (UTC)I like Violet -- but I had no idea it's becoming 'popular'. My niece is named Kayla (about the time it became popular) & she told me one year (she's 10) there were 3 different Kayla's in her class.

Date: 2010-04-14 08:24 pm (UTC)I like Anais, but I can't really find anything about the name Anaia, and I sort of like to know a names meaning. I'm not sure I like Anais Koldewyn though. ^^;;;
Kayla is hugely popular and has been for a long time. lol It's actually moving out now, since it had a high in '95-'96 of #11. But yeah that is exactly why I don't want a name in the top 50 and possible top 100.

Date: 2010-04-15 10:50 am (UTC)I like Lucy it sounds happy. Someone above suggested Susanah, and I have a soft spot for Suzanne and would even consider Susan since that is a very 1940's names and is not used much today.
I hate Artie lol But the only Arthur I know is only called Arthur. I love Solomon in its long form. I can deal with Sol, but I guess.... I would encourage no nickname. I think it helps that Kennis never goes by Ken. Every so often someone who doesn't know him will try to use it to pretend some sort of closeness and I will tell them we don't use it lol It's funny, it's hard for me to think of your as a Jennifer and not Jenn, but I guess if you had grown up in my family you would always be Jennifer. Occasionally close family will shorten things with a diminutive like "Rachie" but it's just for very occasional familial use.

Date: 2010-04-16 11:11 pm (UTC)Hmm, I like quite a few of the names up there. My dad is 'Arthur' so I can never really think of it as a name for a kid. You realise if you name your child 'Aya' she'll fit right in
ifwhen she goes to Japan, right? Alana and Anya are both very nice, and I like both Louisa and Lucy too. Not so mad on the male names - maybe Louis?(no subject)
Date: 2010-04-17 12:49 pm (UTC)See that's actually sort of why I like names like Arthur, they were used a generation or two ago, but are not being used now. It makes them sound fresher and more interesting to me.
I think my taste in male names just tends to be a little bit more off-beat lol
