Testing 1 2 3
Apr. 14th, 2010 07:33 amI am sure by now many people are sick of my pregnancy ramblings, but oh well.
Yesterday, I was checking the cell phone to try to track down my new real estate agent to find a place to rent (which was such a disaster ;;_;; ) when I discovered a message from one of my doctor's offices. I thought I wasn't going to be getting any results until later in the week or that they would call the home # which is why I'd not checked earlier. But no, they'd finished the blood work for my Nuchal and... my chances of having a baby with birth defects are now even less likely than a 20 year old woman. For those who don't know, I am on the older side, and in the past, someone like me would be forced to have an amniocentesis. Beyond the fact that it involves having a needle stuck into your very pregnant belly, it also gives you a 5-10% chance of having a miscarriage. (vs. my risk of birth defects without any other testing is only about .5% ) The majority of miscarriages happen very early in a pregnancy, usually before week 6. (So you barely know you're even pregnant!) After you're out of the first trimester something going wrong drops enormously since the baby is really semi developed, has a beating heart, and is already more than 2 inches from crown to rump. Recently, instead of amnios many women now have a Nuchal Translucency. It is not as accurate as an amnio but is a heck of a lot less invasive. A fancy sonogram is done, and they measure some fluid around the back of the baby's neck. Anything 3 and above is bad. They also then take blood and look for other markers of possible chromosome defects. In a few more weeks I get some more blood work done and then there is one last fancy sonogram to really check things out. But the results of the first round are extremely good and it looks like Ryuu-chan is healthy and progressing normally. It's funny but knowing my baby is doing well, makes all the morning sickness seem worth it.
And finally... a poll. Several caveats about this poll, just because a name gets a lot of votes does not mean I am going to use it, feel free to suggest a name however it must meet certain criteria listed below: Please nothing completely ridiculous, I'm not naming a baby: Megatron or Schneizel. :P I HATE the trend of WASPy last names for first names. Things like Addison and Madison makes me want to break things. I also won't consider names in the top 50 most popular names since I don't want my child known as Abigail K
I'm Ashkenazi Jewish so it is traditional to name your children after dead relatives. It is also traditional not to use a name already in use by another family member. I have the following letters available to me:
A (off limit names: Anne/Ann and Ari)
E (off limit names: Emily)
L (off limit names: Laura, Leah, Linda, and Lucas)
M (off limit names: Megan, Michael, and Miriam)
S (off limit names: Sara/Sarah, Sharon, and Shoshonah) (Edit and Samuel is out! Gah!)
V (off limit names: nothing)
W (William and Willow)
Note: Yes, I have talked to my husband about all these names, and for the most part he doesn't think any of these are that bad, (Azalea is his least favorite) but has no particular favorites. For those curious, Aya is a Hebrew name actually meaning bird-like.
So....
