Religion and other serious topics
Apr. 8th, 2008 10:54 amFirst, I'd like to thank everyone who was kind enough to respond to my last post.
If you don't feel comfortable reading a post about religion and about things you may or may not feel please don't read behind the lj-cut. After some careful thought based on issues I've seen arise repeatedly, 'd like to hope that anyone reading this LJ has the good sense and maturity to not read behind a LJ cut if they know it might upset them and to not share things behind an flock when nothing good will come of it. If I say something that you don't agree with I would prefer you rationally take it up with me. Perhaps I will see your point, perhaps you will see mine, none of us are perfect and as we are just going by things typed on a screen nuance can be lost and things can unintentionally come off harsher than meant.
Religion is generally one of those topics I try to avoid, I know the majority of people on my flist are nominally to fully Christian and I want to stress I think that is great. I don't expect any of you to give up your religion or change it in any way. But this is about what it is like being Jewish and not having an interest in Christianity.
For me, what really got under my skin yesterday was not their fervent belief in their religion, but the methods they tried to use. Like for the Jews for Jesus, they were trying to tap into their barely there Jewish antecedents by trying to claim as a Jew I should read the Book of Mormon because it was "written by Jews." ~.~ Statements like that sicken me and just make me see red. Even if we want to assume the Book of Mormon is completely and factually true, once those ancient "Jews" took Jesus into their hearts when he came to the New World and they left the faith. To me, they are no longer Jews, they're Mormons. And to even try to pretend otherwise I find insulting and chicanery. If they don't feel their religion is strong enough to try to convert me on its actual practice, why should I want to join it? This is why Jews for Jesus also disgusts me, they prey on the weak and try to muddle the waters and confuse things. Jews do not believe in the divinity of Jesus. I don't care if Jesus was Jewish. Jews do not believe in the divinity of Jesus.
That and we all know I just love to read gay porn on the internet. Speaking of which, I never thought I would live to see the day when I would say I've read gay underage (16) alien right to life m-preg.

Date: 2008-04-08 03:12 pm (UTC)I'm sorry you have to put up with stuff like that... it must be very frustrating to have them try and target you as a Jew.
I respect other people's right to practice their religion, but only insofar as they don't infringe on or victimize others. It bothers me when they try to manipulate me... how successful can they be in converting me if they have to trick me into talking about religion, or use a flimsy pretext to get me to listen to them?

Date: 2008-04-09 03:11 pm (UTC)And yes, that is exactly what upsets me so much, the fact they're trying to deceive me. We've had Mormon missionaries show up in our neighborhood before, but I've never gotten so pissed. In fact I've tried to be nice to them since I can't imagine it is a lot of fun trying to get converts around here. >>;; Most people already have a religion they're pretty happy with.

Date: 2008-04-08 04:18 pm (UTC)You KNOW we are the targets, right? We are the perfect morsel to all religions to convert over. Like they must get some sort of extra points for every jew they get to say, "Jesus is my savior!" Or some such BS.
Personally, I think most christian based religions forget that Jesus WAS a jew (and maybe that's why we are so wanted by them). And well, while some may convert, when you go up to one of us and start your BS and you get the unibrow from me... get the fuck out of my face. OMG... I've had some of the WORST experiences with stupid people over religion OVER and OVER again.
If Jesus loves everyone, then he should understand us Jews especially. Leave us the FUCK alone. If we WANT to believe in him, we will seek you out. We're not stupid. We know you are out there. We don't need you knocking on my door, wasting my time and trying to baptize me in my bathtub (true story).

Date: 2008-04-09 03:15 pm (UTC)Technically, some of the Christian faiths don't want us, they like the fact that Jews get persecuted as proof that we need to suffer cause he wouldn't accept Jesus. There are also a few evangelical strains that believe there need to be some Jews around so that Jesus can return.
I've had perfectly decent Mormon missionaries show up here before, but these two asses just would not leave and were not getting that I and no one I know wants to convert. ~.~ I swear next time I am getting names and reporting them.

Date: 2008-04-08 05:11 pm (UTC)As far as Mormons specifically. . . I could probably go on and on, but when it comes to the Mormon vs. Jews debate, what pisses me off more than anything is that they *still* do that damn baptism for the dead and they continue to do it for Jews, despite having *promised* that they would stop. And the only reason they promised is because they got caught with Anne Frank's name on their register. (I am very bitter about this proxy baptism crap, especially since they did it for a friend who was excommunicated a long time before he died.)

So are you thinking Jesus Shirou or Jesus Yamato?

Date: 2008-04-08 11:56 pm (UTC)He did? Well, Bakura did seem like he was into making the little librarian get more aggressive... though still, Ryou topping just boggles my mind.
Puzzle date? Oh man, Yami is sooooo gonna do Yugi. And I will rejoice, and then Seto and Jou have amusing awkward sex cause you so know Seto is a virgin and I will laugh my ass off.

Date: 2008-04-09 12:04 am (UTC)The Puzzle date is just obliquely mentioned, I am hoping it is in the next chapter, cause I need my puzzle! I think Yugi is going to play hard to get, it sounds like sex with Jou emotionally scarred him. Maybe Jou made him top XD;

Date: 2008-04-09 03:19 pm (UTC)My father refuses to let my in-laws know the names of any of our relatives so that they can't get a proxy baptism, and seriously, I'm sorry proxy baptisms are WEIRD. It's the sort of thing that seriously pisses me off.
And oddly, I don't think I would fit in as a Mormon, not when one of my big hobbies is reading and writing gay porn. >D;
