So it seems Mattel has appropriated the song Barbie Girl by Aqua. Of coruse they've changed some of the lyrics, but the chorus is mostly still intact and it's obviously still Barbie Girl Oh the IRONY!

In other appropriated songs with newly changed lyrics news... last night was my ultra orthodox cousin's wedding. It took me a long time to figure out what I was going to wear as I don't tend to dress orthodox appropriate. In the end I decided to wear my floral print dress I bought for Dolpa last year (and wore to my SiL's wedding) and just wear a longer and higher cardigan with it to hide the fact it had spaghetti straps. I think it went well! The food was horrible. I feel awful for my aunt since I am sure she paid a small fortune. I am also convinced that Orthodox caterers can not cook worth a damn. Maybe the sushi was OK but it was nearly all fish. Also, you'd think people who were concerned with dietary restrictions would understand being a vegetarian, but so made of FAIL. The mixed drinks were good. ♥ My cousin looked beautiful and her friends did a spectacular job of keeping dancing around and keeping the energy level high. The band was so loud I am surprised no one on my flist could hear them. I couldn't catch all of them because they were playing with the tempo but now I am thinking they might have done Linkin Park as well o_O but the band was taking pop songs and giving them Hebrew lyrics that bore no relation to the actual song lyrics. The highlight of realization was when I suddenly recognized Dragostea Din Tei by O-zone. Now the fact that this was changed into Hebrew was particularly funny since it is not in English to even start with. The people asking for money, particularly the semi-crazed old man, were creepy.

Well except the lyrics had nothing to do with the original song so it was really bizarre. I remember years ago at the same cousins' Bat Mitzvah they had someone singing "Mambo #5" with changed lyrics to make them Jewish appropriate. They were in English and so even funnier because well... the original song lol

It doesn't matter where you sent it from, just that you sent it and thought of me. ^_^ It means a lot to me! ♥

Not quite since I think the lyrics from what I remember at least tend to be about what the anime is about even if they're not a good translation of the lyrics. This was more like... Mambo #5 being about the attributes of studying Torah. It just leaves you going "whut?!?!"

I try to make sure to send them, though my first trip is going to be really short so probably everyone will get them from my second trip. I also like to try to buy postcard sets so I can send people slightly different cards. Since I've been sending them for so many years I can never remember exactly what I sent but I know if I go someplace new it is bound to have new cards for me to send. :D

Ooh, postcard sets are a really good idea! And that is the nice thing about traveling to large cities - postcards abound!

Actually Tokyo and Osaka are meh for postcards. ~.~ I tend to buy those sets of say 7 or 8 postcards for 350 yen, since I tend to send like 40 postcards per trip to Japan and it is much cheaper to buy the sets than to buy individuals. If I were just sending one or two cards that would be one thing, but I'm not. lol

I think part of it is both places only have limited tourist sights and most of the ones in Tokyo I have been to so many times I don't go back to them. >>;;;;;;

Postcards are usually easiest to buy in packs at a tourist sight, so for example last trip everyone got a postcard from either: Hiraizumi, Kakunodate, Hirosaki, I think I got a set at Haguro-san, Lake Towada-ko and I think Zao.

In March I know I sent Hakone and Kamakura so people ight get repeats of those. It's hard when you send so many it is hard to keep track of what you sent each person. It's easier when I know I am going places no one has gotten on from before like say if I finally make it to Takayama or Matsushima. :)

I know a lot of people and I have relatives. I like to send postcards because I can't afford to get everyone a gift but a postcard lets someone know you were thinking of them and is a way to send a little bit of cheer. :)

Plus who doesn't like to get something in the mail?

I am dumb -- can you please explain why Orthodox women aren't allowed to wear pants? (I understand about short, short skirts). And why are girl babies allowed to wear onesies, etc.?

BTW ... I bought some rather expensive granola at Whole Foods today & it was nowhere nearly as tasty as yours. ^_^

I don't know why girl babies are allowed to wear onesies. I can ask someone Orthodox for you on Sunday if I am stuck seeing them all though. I'm not Orthodox so I of course wear pants and would have no problem putting a baby of either sex in onesies.

I believe there is something in the Torah/Bible forbidding men and women from wearing one another's clothing and thus women are not allowed to wear pants and I guess men would technically not be allowed to wear skirts/kilts. The short skirts, sleeves etc are modesty issues.

I'm glad you liked mine best, I need to make more but I am low on chocolate chips. >>;; Maybe tomorrow I will go and get some. I tend to buy my granola from Trader Joe's. >>;;;; Granola is actually surprisingly easy to make.

The band sounds hilarious! I can't see why they'd change all the lyrics - there goes any hope of singing along - but it does sound quite amusing. Shame about the food, though!

Technically, they don't want us singing along because you know the sound of a woman's voice singing might get a guy aroused and thus would be immodest. Or some nonsense like that. I think this just proves they have not heard my singing voice since no one would claim it was sexy.

It was loud, very very loud. And the food was bad. lol I think I am stuck seeing them all on Sunday and it is going to suck because there are just too many of them for me.

BTW so are you going to Israel this year or is your Aunt coming to you? I was a little confused. ^_^;

*giggles* Gee, heaven forbid the man might actually be able to keep himself under control. I hate how women always seem to be to blame for everything. I do have to agree about your singing voice, but I will say you sound very enthusiastic when you sing, and that helps a lot - listening to someone who is clearly enjoying herself is much better than listening to someone who has absolutely no interest in what she's doing. (Besides, you pick such cracky songs to sing! ^_^)

Oh dear, all the relatives again. I think I'll be going through the same thing in Cape Town in January. Good luck dealing with them all on the weekend!

We're actually doing both! My aunt is here at the moment and goes back just at the start of October, then on the 4th October Mum and I fly out to stay with her. I'm only staying a week, though. It'll be my first trip there, so I'm expecting plenty of weirdness. We're going to do a day trip to Jerusalem, but other than that I think we're making it up as we go, because Mum is dying to show me all her favourite places.

I'm guessing you're heading back in the very near future? When are you going this time, and whereabouts? Any more adventures with fish nibbling your toes? I don't think I'm after anything this time but thanks for the offer. (I don't know, does your trip coincide with any doujinshi events?)

Yes I leave on 10/1 then I come back on the 6th and then go back out on the 15th. I wanted to be home for part of Sukkot. I'm just going to be in Kansai for the first bit and the second part is much longer and will involve Tokyo and sightseeing. I'm selling or at least trying to sell at a Suzaku only event on 10/18 and on 11/1 I'm going to Spark the big general Fall doujinshi thing at Big Sight. :) I hear Basara is very popular for douijnshi right now >>;;;

Thank you! Yeah, I'll be there for all but the first couple of days, I think. Since none of us are religious, it won't make any difference to what we do personally, but I can see it might be pretty interesting being in Israel at the time!

Ah, one of your split trips again. Are you doing doll things in Kansai? I assume there's some reason you're going then, else you'd just wait till after the holidays. And hey, selling doujinshi again! Go, Rachel! I will keep my fingers crossed that people will buy from you.

I am hoping they will have something new out that won't be text only but as they don't appear to have a website (or if they do, it must be the most well-kept secret on the planet!) it's tricky to follow their books.
