I'm ready for Passover to be over and it hasn't even started yet. The cleaning did not go well this year, I think the only year we had more problems was in 2007 (which was coincidentally another time I came back from Japan right before Passover) Only this year my husband is really not into it so much either so neither of us are doing what we should be doing. I'm trying to make my livingroom look presentable and if I have time I want to vacuum. We're not going to talk about the dinning room which needs to be finished for the company tomorrow. *sighs*

It doesn't help that I also don't even know who is coming. My parents are having a major row so I might be the one getting most of the guests. It's not as bad as it could be, because this year, we are so eating rice! I've decided Ashkenazic Jews are insane, there is no leavening in rice, like none. If I serve rice, it suddenly opens up so many more options and makes it so much easier to feed all out guests.

Thanks [livejournal.com profile] twotone for your postcard ♥

This is the great disadvantage of having company for the holidays - all the cleaning! (We obviously need to trade relatives, as when my aunt comes to stay, she actually does the cleaning for us and we get a break.) I hope you managed to squeeze in time to vacuum!

My parents are having a major row so I might be the one getting most of the guests.

Oh dear, this sounds like a disaster in the making. Hope it all goes smoothly, somehow! *hugs*

I just wanted to say thank you for the postcard! It arrived about a week ago, but we've been so busy with convention prep I've neglected so many other things. X_X;;;

What do modern Jewish eat for Passover?

On the bright side, at least now that a lot of the cleaning is done the house looks so much nicer. Like you can see the floor lots of places and there is not lint/cat fur everywhere. >>;;; I managed to get the entryway living room, dinning room and kitchen done pretty well. The bedroom is partially done and same with the bathroom. The dressing room and the other 2 bedrooms are disasters. Probably during the next few days I will start trying to work on them which means trying to make a dent on sales since they're full of crap I don't want. >>;;;;; I should prob try to get some pictures while things actually good.

Somehow they managed to patch things up some. I am still waiting to see if this means I am getting an additional 3 guests to sedar because of this.

BTW your Aunt is welcome to come here and clean :P

I'm so glad you got it! :D I'm hoping my trip in 2-3 weeks is as good as that trip, though I'm a bit hehing with organization. >>;

Well, it depends on a lot of things, like if you are Ashkenazic or Sephardic. (Ashkenazic Jews are from Eastern and Central Europe while Spehardic Jews are from the Middle East and Mediterranean.) Most American Jews are Ashkenazic and sadly, Ashkenazic Rabbis made a bunch of decisions that really restrict what one can eat for Passover.

Traditionally, you're not supposed to eat anything leavened. And to help keep you on the straight and narrow all the Rabbis agreed that this meant no grains of any type except matzoh+products made from matzoh. The Ashkenazic also included: corn, all legumes, and rice.

A traditional dinner would be things like: chicken matzoh ball soup, Gelifite fish (this fish dish I never liked lol), Matzoh farfel (it's like broken up matzoh with egg and vegetable), a broiled chicken or like brisket, with some nasty pre-packaged cake.

Me, my husband and my mother are all vegetarians and don't eat any meat including fish. This makes things much more complicated. XD;;

This year, I've decided to eat rice. The current menu for tonight is looking like:

imitation chicken with matzoh ball soup (oddly I grew up eating the fake stuff lol), roasted beet and arugula salad with goat cheese. I might also do an arugula and pear salad. A marinated broiled mushroom dish with maybe quinoa. a frittata, mashed potatoes, and a risotto. For dessert I am making this simple recipe called matzoh crunch which is actually delicious even when it is not Passover and I might make some guacamole as well, since it tastes amazing on matzoh. XD;

Yup! :D Though my mom always serves some fish at hers for my father and some of their guests. Mine is always meat free.
