As of yesterday, my grandmother in law was doing better. She's still not out of the woods by a long shot, but hubby doesn't need to catch a plane flight today and I don't have to worry about canceling my dentist appointment next week for a funeral.

And in more happy news, the work on the attic is nearly complete and the dollar has risen slightly against the yen. It is sad that 94 yen to the dollar seems good, but after that long stretch where it was closer to 87, it makes a huge difference. I'm debating when to buy my pass since I would prefer a better exchange rate. I would love it to be 100 by the time I go to Japan even if I pre paid for most of my hotels at a higher rate. It would just be nice to have that 100 yen to the $ while there so I could buy certain things easier, like Dolpa things. If we can make it to 100 yen, I might start looking at Y!J more seriously again since YoSD Ryou keeps selling for under 45,000 yen for the new version and under 40,000 for the Osaka one.

Association Meme: Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

1. Gardening: I use to attempt to grow strawberries when I was in Jr. High school in my parents yard but nothing ever came of it and I thought I had a brown thumb. But when my husband fell into peak oil he decided to turn our front yard into an edible garden and started some garden squares. At first I let him do all the work, but when he got busy our second year and nothing got planted, I decided to give it a whirl despite my early failures. I also decided to try to get some more flowers/shrubs in the ground to attempt to make my yard look a little more presentable.

That first summer, 2007, I actually had... success and there was something amazing about planting seeds and getting something fresh and delicious you could eat with it. I'm not super excited about all the things I hope to plant this year and I'm looking into turning my parent's side yard into a huge vegetable garden whose produce I will sell at a local farmer's market! :D

The big thing I've discovered is soil makes a huge difference! You really need to make sure to add enough compost or most plants won't grow. I planted a ton of garlic in the Fall, and I'm going through Seed catalogs to see what I can hopefully get in the ground before I go to Japan. :D

2. Doujinshi: I've been avidly collecting doujinshi since 2002. Originally I was a little weirded out by the idea of buying gay cartoon porn, just ask [livejournal.com profile] cc_lemon but as I got more into various series where the slash was overwhelming. My first doujinshi event was a small Tenipuri one in November 2002 and then I went to a larger multi series one at the end of the month. At that point I was looking for I think MomoRyo and AsuKira from Seed. lol While MomoRyo had its fans, AsuKira was to become one of the big pairings of doujinshi in general and not just Seed. lol Since then, I've attended a lot of events and planned trips to Japan to specifically go to smaller events. I have a huge collection and also sometimes sell them.

Lately, I've been working hard on trying to do my own doujinshi. I want to sort of be more a part of Japanese doujinshi fandom and so it was the next logical step. I'm anxious about my next event and wish I could have done SCC but hopefully this one is a success!

3. Shinkansen:

The wonderful express trains one takes to get all around Japan, I positively adore them. I tend to shink all over Japan and only wish I could use the Nozomi, the fastest trains from Tokyo-Fukuoka that are not available to rail pass holders. I tend to spend a lot of time on the shinks while in Japan and try to even plot which ones I want ahead of time in Japan thanks to some time table sites. I am expecting to spend even more time shinking this next trip since I want to go at least as far as Okayama :D

4. Dolls:

I've wanted to collect dolls ever since I was a little girl. I loved playing with my Barbies for years even though I sometimes resented how often they were blond and tan at the time and how none of them had bangs >>;; As an adult, it took Takara to bring me back into the doll fold. While not actively collecting anymore, I still do enjoy seeing Jenny and Licca along with their myriad of friends. Thanks to Biscuitbear, I moved from Takara into BJDs which is the current sort of doll I am collecting. I don't always spend the time on my dolls I ought but I do enjoy them muchly. I'm currently in the process of making a cast of Geass chibis out of some of my dolls. :D

I'm also much more into the picture taking side of dolls while with Takara I was more into the fashion aspect.

I don't know how many different dolls I own, it doesn't help that I still have some of my old dolls from when I was little. Of my childhood dolls, my favorite line is still the Honey Hill Bunch dolls. A combination vinyl and cloth doll that was only really produced when I was a kid. I actually now own most of the dolls produced for the line >>;;

5. New York:

I've lived almost my entire life within 45 minutes of Manhattan. I like to think of myself as very New York though I'm probably not since I've never actually lived in the city and I've never stayed over night in Manhattan lol I guess I am really more NY suburban XD;; I take great pride in being from New York despite the fact I sometimes wish my accent was not as strong as it is. There are people with stronger ones but there are certain words where it really comes out, like "orange" and "horrible" lol I actually also love the state of NY including all the upstate bits! Growing up, we use to do all out family vacations in upstate because my Dad hates to fly. A lot of NY is really pretty and doesn't look anything like the more citified parts I grew up in. I really enjoyed High Falls Gorge, the Lake George Area, Saratoga and Cooperstown. Sometimes, I think I would have made a better Senator from NY since I have actually lived here most of my life and actually care about both upstate and downstate. though the buying gay cartoon porn probably works against me XD;;;
