My mother called me today to let me know the surgeon canceled her surgery appointment o_O While this is sort of a relief for me, it's also sort of.. not.. because my Mom is in a lot of pain and this means she has to wait until probably July to try and get some relief.

I don't know if this means my sister now won't be coming in either.

It's all a bit overwhelming.

I hope they can squeeze her in before that. That sucks.

The problem is the soonest the Doctor can meet her is April o_O;;; And she doesn't want to schedule the surgery in May because she has plans for early June to visit her college room mate. So that sort of pushes everything into July.

I don't know what she is going to do when the handicapped parking pass expires in May, she really does still need it!

It really does suck because she knows everything that can go wrong with surgery since the first surgery was a failure. I really wish now they had been able to get her in on the 4th.

I'll get back in touch with you via sales, can I have our email addy as well please?

The problem is she has plans for early June and if she doesn't go in to see the doctor until the 2nd week in April she can't have the surgery until after her trip in June. May is also a really complicated month for me since it is my College reunion this year and I might try to go to SCC

It's just very frustrating.

Oh man, that's not cool. D: I understand how it's kind of a relief, but also kind of not!

It's mostly not since it makes my mother particularly cranky >>;;;;;; She was feeling really hopeful and upbeat about the surgery. She's decided to meet with another surgeon now as well, I think that is #6?

Aw, man, that's a lot of surgeons. D: I hope #6 is better than #5!

The problem is none of them want to admit that the first surgery was a failure except this surgeon which is why my mother wants to go with him. The others all want to do a much more complicated surgery which has more risks and which her current condition does not call for.

I'm hoping the next surgeon goes well too.

Ugh - you know, part of science (and medicine, I think!) is admitting mistakes. That's really not cool of them at all. The simplest procedure should always be the first choice!

Yeah, you would think that would be how it goes but I think no one wants to call out their colleague. BLARGH.

And now this doctor who was willing to do the surgery wants to do some sort of weird nerve test to make sure the pain isn't just remembered pain and is real, when there is something obvious wrong on the MRIs ~.~

Blargh. Well, at least it's (kind of) still a step in the right direction. >>;

She's on a bunch of drugs right now ._. The problem is her spinal column is just too close to her nerve and if she moves the wrong way, usually walking it puts a lot of pressure on it.

I got to see her MRIs when I went to see one of the doctor's with her and it's actually sort of.. obvious looking so that even a lay person like me can see it! She's had this problem for 4 or so years now. She had a failed surgery in 2006, but none of the doctors except this one are willing to admit that is the case. Now a bunch of them want to do a much more complicated surgery to fix something that is not a problem yet. She liked this doctor because he just wanted to re-do the first surgery.

It's just really frustrating.

Owie. I hope your mom can get rescheduled as soon as possible. As I've been going thru major health issues last year - it is VERY important to be your own advocate.
But if your mom also likes a particular surgeon (and as long as she's also confident in the job he can do) -- that's important too.

Good vibes for your mom...

Oh my mom is definitely her own advocate, it helps that she works for an independent medical publication so often knows a lot about various drugs and if not can look up the information on them. It's sort of how she has gotten into this situation as this is actually the 5th or 6th surgeon she has talked to. Most of them want to do a much more complicated and major surgery where they re-do the decompression and then fuse her spine. She is not interested in this, as there is no reason currently to do the fusion and she is not keen on it, which is why she keeps going to different surgeons.

She's meeting another one next week!

Though her newest pain doctor now is not sure her condition calls for surgery and has changed her pain medications, so please cross your fingers that this makes a big difference!

Canceled? Surgeons can do that at will? 0_o

Five months. Hopefully your mother doesn't have to wait that long, and isn't in a lot of pain >>

Yeah... or well it's not canceled so much as postponed. >>;; Though it might be for the best because her newest pain doctor has changed her medications and thinks this will solve most of her problems.

She's in less than she use to be the problem is more she just can't walk a lot or stand still for more than 5-10 minutes. The waiting is partially her fault. She doesn't want to have surgery in May because she wants to go away the first week in June.

Though the new pain doctor we saw today is hopeful that changing her medication might prevent her from needing a second surgery! :D

*hugs*

Yeah, *hugs* And this is a second surgery.

I think in the end this is for the best now because we went to the pain doctor today (her second pain doctor) and he thinks a change in medication might solve some of her problems. So hopefully that works and then she won't need a second surgery.
