My parents are coming in about an hour to eat leftovers with us. I really need to make the downstairs look a little neater or my mother will be quite complainy.

I'm deeply saddened and troubled by the terrorist attacks in India and I feel awful for anyone wondering about a relative. A friend of ours from the Synagogue had traveled to India over the summer and has spoken about how wonderful his time there was.

I'm deeply horrified by by this article .

As several people asked me last post, a Sunchoke or Jerusalem Artichoke, is a tuber. It's a native sunflower to North America and the tuber has a nubby look and a nutty flavor. And since they say if you change a recipe at least 3 times it becomes yours...

Jerusalem Artichoke Bisque based on a recipe by Deborah Madison from the cookbook Local Flavors
1 small onion
3 smallish potatoes I've used both red and white
6-7 Jerusalem Artichokes
2 T of Almond Oil (Walnut oil can also be used)
3 garlic cloves
2 cups of vegetable stock+4 cups of water (can be all water)
salt and black pepper
3 bay leaves
milk or cream for thinning I use skim milk

1. Wash all the vegetables well and chop them into about 1 inch big chunks. The artichokes do not need to be peeled and neither do the potatoes, but should be washed well.

2. Heat the oil in a soup pot and add the vegetables (except the garlic). Saute over high heat stirring frequently until lightly browned, about 10 minutes. Add the garlic during the last 2-3 minutes of the saute. Add the stock/water, the bay leaves, salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a boil and then lower the heat to let simmer for 25 minutes or until the potatoes are tender.

3. Cool briefly and remove the bay leaves. Puree until perfectly smooth (I use an immersion blender) Return the soup to the stove and add enough milk/cream to reach the desired consistency. Add salt+black pepper to taste.

The stuff going on in Mumbai is terrifying... and that article. Wow. What is wrong with people?!

And I've heard of a Jerusalem artichoke! I had no idea it had another name.

Yeah, I can't really imagine just shoving my way into a store like that and not worrying about anyone else. I mean they broke down the doors! The doors! o_O;

Mumbai is a true tragedy and it doesn't help that this really is making the situation in the Middle East/Asia a little more shaky.

Yeah, I found this out when I was looking up recipes with what to do with a Jerusalem Artichoke as I'd never heard of either originally. I can tell you it makes a fabulous soup and I am tempted to try to track down more even though it is now sort of winter. I'm hoping if I can make it to Union Square they have some there. >>;

I was dimly aware of the scary things happening in Mumbai, but it hadn't clicked to me that this was the *same* India that Daniel's parents are vacationing in *right this moment* until their house-sitter left us a message yesterday, worried and unable to enjoy her Thanksgiving. Thankfully, John and Nina seem to be in a different part of India at the moment... but it's a scary, scary time.

The article you linked to is scary in a different way... I feel terrible for that person's family.

Thank you for the Jerusalem artichoke/sunchoke recipe. I'll have to try it next time I see them on sale!

I had forgotten Daniel's parents had gone to India, I just remembered them being away. I'm very happy they're both OK! It must be very frightening for them right now. I remember how unpleasant it was in the UK after 9/11.

I can't understand how they let something like that happen. I think all the customers in the store should be given some sort of warning, they murdered someone!

I am not sure how often they are on sale, we got ours from the CSA but the soup is really good. It has a light nutty flavor.

We just got a call from Daniel's mom this morning. They were actually on a river cruise these last few days, out of both phone and radio contact, so I am guessing they didn't even find out about what's going on in Mumbai until yesterday or today!

That's good? I think. Will it make it harder for them to leave? We were fortunate and only delayed 1 day leaving London but we didn't know it was only going to be one day.

I hope they're still able to enjoy their time there.

My cousin was asking me about Thailand, but the protests there seem more non-violent.

Friended you back and responded to your email! :)

At least in your story, it just happened to happen on Black Friday, not because people were being moronic and greedy. It sounds like that fight could have happened anywhere those two couples happened to meet. o_O; Though 2 men running around a store like that... frightening.

Every time I read something about the incidents in India, I just felt so sick. But the other article... I think it takes the cake.

It's really delicious, I would recommend it if you ever can track down the sunchokes. I'm hoping to get some more so I can make the soup again. :)
