Who is NOT going to LA Dolpa in November? Why me! My family ALWAYS comes before any hobby, and my parents would be devastated if I missed Thanksgiving. I strongly suspected they were going to make it this particular week end because I believe the 23rd is a holiday in Japan and maybe they were hoping to lure in more Japanese attendees.

I'm sort of wondering how that is going to work with Doll Show in October and Dolpa in December and most sewing circles having day jobs. ^^;;

That and they need to pay their own way.

I think they tried to compromise both parties and ended up pleasing neither -___-

are you going to go? I mean for me the cost isn't even an issue when the whole family issue comes into play. I am not giving up family for a hobby, but for my family Thanksgiving has always been very special.

I think if most Japanese have to pay their own way, they are much much less likely to go. We're taking airfare of at least $500 roundtrip and 2 nights hotel on top of that, plus time off and who wants to travel so far just for a week end. o_O

Most likely, I usually go to every US doll event. I might try to deal some handmade clothes though to make back the plane ticket cost as it's double the normal price since it's Thanksgiving weekend. I have family near LA so I might end up spending Thanksgiving with them and calling it even. I don't think they've celebrated Thanksgiving in years.

I really wonder what the turn-out will be, many US people already are saying they are not attending or that they think they won't. x____x I'm afraid to buy my ticket because I feel so many people might complain about the date that Volks might change it...

I expect people in the CA area will definitely go, the real question is how much of a non-west coast turn out will there be. Nearly everyone who has posted they are definitely going is west coast or quite young.

I doubt they'll change it, from their perspective it's good because any staff they bring from Japan is missing less work.

One thing I have realized is 5000 sq ft is no where near as much space as I first thought o_O;; My property is 50x100. ^^;;;

Aww, I'm sorry that you won't be able to make it :( I live in the area and I don't go home for Thanksgiving, so it's not an issue for me, but I know a lot of people will miss out because of this :/

Yeah, I suspect the majority of people attending will be CA people and a few other people from nearby. I think it just really hurts in terms of people from elsewhere in the country attending.

I don't really mind missing out though, I'm going to Japan in October :D

Wow - what timing... I'm going to try and make it solo, but everyone's traveling around that time and flights from Hawaii are uber expensive. X____X *sigh*

I really have no idea what flights to and from Hawaii are like now. I looked many yeas ago as I had wanted to go for my honeymoon, but we just didn't have the money at the time ;;_;;

BTW have you ever thought about going to a Dolpa in Japan? Is airfare to Japan similarly priced to LA?

My flight would be over $400 and when you include hotel it just seems like an awful lot. Plus I would have to fly out on Fri or Sat and fly home Mon.

Secretly, I think I am going to work to get my sister to fly home from CA instead >>;

Prices seem to be about $350-1500 depending on the days and times of flight. X_X;; Part of me wonders if I should try and book my flight now with the prices I see. >_>;; I have a good chance at grabbing a room with friends, which will help cut costs... *sigh*

Flights to Japan from Hawaii run about $800-1000. I hear it's cheaper for folks to fly from the mainland than here.. (How that works, I have no idea. T_T;)

Gah! I had no idea. Yes, for me it is closer to $750 if it is off season and I fly into Tokyo or Nagoya. It's more if I fly in and out of Osaka, but since my good friends live in Kansai it is usually worth it.

If you can get $350 and you think you can definitely go... I doubt it will be lower.

BTW have you checked JTB for flights to Japan or just airline's sites? JTB often has much lower prices, I'm seeing $700 or so round trip to Tokyo for the summer and it should be lower in the Fall.

I hope to do my West Coast family...Thanksgiving.

I bet many will not be able to either afford the extra cost..and hassle of Thanksgiving travel.

At least they are giving people advance notice.

From: [identity profile] rkold.livejournal.com
It is a lot of extra cost and a lot of extra hassle. I suspect that it will mean the majority of attendees are from the West Coast.

For me the advance notice doesn't really help. I'd long suspected because the 23rd is a holiday in Japan this is when it would be. It's just hard to decide to spend 2/3 of the price of airfare to Japan for a week end, when I can go to Japan and attend Doll Show or Dolpa there.

Ehh, I'm going to think positively about the Japanese dealers. It'll be fun, nonetheless. I'm sorry you won't be able to make it.

I'll have to work, prolly, but this'll be a time when working graveyards pays off :3

Oh I definitely think it will be fun and I think there will be a lovely opportunity for lots of people to meet up, but thanks to a friend, I've just realized 5000 sq feet is not actually that much ^^;;; I mean I am sure there will be a few dealers, or if Volks is clever, they'll buy items from dealers to sell a la like they do at the Sumikas and Sato since it solves the language issues as well the permit issues and any financial issues. It also solves the issue of trying to bring items out to the event. But if you're asking me will there be as many Japanese dealers as I Doll West, I am thinking no.
