My husband is rather addicted to web comics, most of them not being ones I am particularly into. Among the ones he reads is Real Life Comics. He forwarded me an entry recently because the little blog bit underneath was all about NY vs. California, and my husband knows I have a strong tendency towards NY provinciality. As I was reading the entry, I was a bit surprised to realize that the writer, just like one of the other FDQ volunteers had been in NY the same time period, had gone to see Spamlot, and had won some Best Peasant Award, something the volunteer in question had been excessively pleased about. They also have the same first name (I forgot the volunteer's last name) and the same profession. Coincidence? I think not. Though it's interesting he never mentions his doll hobby in the comics XD;

Greg Dean was one of the volunteers as well as his wife Elizabeth.
He is the author of that web comic.

Looks like he may be closeting the doll hobby, at least towards his readers. Daniel did some investigating and found this:

Old news entry from April 17 2007

"In just two months, Liz' con, "Dollectable", will be debuting. Liz is a collector of the Asian Ball-Jointed Dolls, and has been organizing this convention for the better part of a year, to be held at the Clarion in South San Francisco June 1-3. Everything's shaping up quite nicely, but we thought it behooved us to ask for some help. Maybe you've got access to AV equipment yourself. Maybe you just know a guy who knows a guy. In any case, if you have any leads on getting a good deal to rent or borrow 3 projectors and screens, an audio setup, (Mics and speakers for a presentation room) and perhaps a camera to hook up to a projector for close up work during panels, send Liz an e-mail and let her know.

What's my part in all this? Security, of course. I get to wear a black shirt, dark sunglasses, and stand around looking menacing. Quit laughing."

Oh, and he also found this on the comic forums (link to a thread from 2006).

It's funny... one of our friends is also a webcomic artist and is a friend of Greg Dean's. Yet we had no idea he was the same Greg as the one at Dolpa!

He was the male volunteer who is not Bruce and his wife was the only female volunteer who looked younger than me/was younger than me, at least I assume she is....

He is so a collector. :P The Kurumi in the chain mail was his and he talked about making the chain mail himself. He also talked about his non-Volks girls He seriously was considering doing a FCS lol

What comic does your friend do?

My friend's most famous for his comics "Roomies" (college roommate comedy-drama), "It's Walky!" (science fiction) and "Joyce and Walky" (partially subscriber-only)... but his current free comic is Shortpacked, a comic about toy collecting and the frustrations of working at a totally insane toy store. He also does standalone strips at the toy news site Toy News International.

Hmmmm I don't think Kennis has found those yet. I really don't follow any, just see the ones Kennis decides to follow for various reasons. Though I tried a few of the ones that were on FST like Alien loves Predator. >>;

Quick question: I know you mentioned you were probably going to Japan in October - has that been arranged, and if so, when?

(Sorry, I know I've been really bad about commenting for the last few weeks but RL = a little hectic right now.)

I am prob going now since I sold the doll I needed to for airfare. At the moment my goal is the long time period of the 6th-22, but we shall see if that actually happens. There is a huge doujinshi event on the 7th and Doll Show is the 21st. Want to go also? Japan===love, though I promised [livejournal.com profile] yanchamonkey to visit and I want to get in some non-Tokyo sight seeing. There is also going to be a doll event at TnS in October at some point. >>;

I'd comment on yours but I'm just not that into boybands of any type. I mean I'll listen to their songs, but like them enough to actually follow them.. no. Though Arashi was hilarious on the one TV show I randomly watched with [livejournal.com profile] yanchamonkey

I'd comment on yours but I'm just not that into boybands of any type.

I admit, I am a bit obsessed at the moment. It's not that I'm not into other things right now, it's just that all my posts seem to wind up being band-related in some way! I guess I'm still in the honeymoon phase. ^_^

Anyway, the reason I asked in that Koon is going to be in Tokyo in the last week of September, but obviously I will want to stay more than just the one week and I figured if you were going to be there in early October I'd take my "extra" time at that end of the holiday. I'm just waiting for Koon to confirm her exact travel dates before I book my flight, but I'm definitely going. (Which is why I've been grinning like a maniac since yesterday afternoon.)

But because it looks like I'll still be working when I go, my holiday will obviously be limited. I will probably fly from here on the 20th or 21st September, as I think Koon is going to be there from the 22nd, so I guess the latest I could stay would be till some time the second week in October. Which means that, if you were there, we could meet up! (And weigh my luggage down with doujinshi - which event is this?)

Okay, Koon's just confirmed as I was writing this comment that she will be there 22/9-28/9, so yes, I'll probably extend my holiday on the October side. (And then die from excessive happiness, no doubt!)

I can tell you there are definitely doujinshi of all those boybands. I sold a few at one point, I think kat-tun or whatever they're called. <<

It's a relatively large event, though I'm not sure how I plan to space my trip out in terms of Tokyo/non-Tokyo. Will you have a rail pass? I was semi thinking of going to IDoll but I can try to stay around longer in Tokyo otherwise.

Since I want to try to make it until the 22nd I can't go so much earlier than the 5 or 6, I am also trying to work around holidays. I know I need to be there by the 6th as the event is the 7th

I plan to splurge and stay in Odaiba since it is more convenient when eventing at big sight I think.

I'm not sure my brain could take KAT-TUN doujinshi - though I'd like to see it try!

I hadn't really thought as far ahead as rail travel yet - I've only known about this since about 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon - but I should be able to get around okay as long as I don't accidentally get out the wrong exit at the station again!

Anyway, I would normally leave Japan on the 5th or the 8th and fly home, but if you're going to be there I would probably leave at the end of the week instead. I know it wouldn't be long but we'd still get to meet up for a few days. I'd be an idiot to leave just before you got there, after all!

I'll be staying in Ikebukuro again, at least while Koon's there, but that is what public transport is for. I haven't thought about what I want to do for the time I'm by myself yet, but it's probably a good opportunity for me to be a bit of a tourist for a change!

(I've been trying to write this comment for about three hours, but have been trying to talk Koon down from a mid-life crisis so I'm running rather behind.)

Actually I might books some of my hotel stay now, cause [livejournal.com profile] gokumew2 found the most amazing hotel price for Tokyo and I can not resist!

At the moment, I will prob arrive 10/5 since the doujinshi event is 10/7 and 10/5 is a Friday and a Jewish holiday so Kennis couldn't take me to the airport. I need to count days and figure out rail pass combos but I wan to put the non airfare part soon. (The airfare is ridiculous right now)

Catch me on AIM or email or something and we can talk some plans. I might over book hotel stays just cause I can always cancel some. I am also prob going to avail myself of Takyuubin service. ^^; The big experiment will be trying to figure out how to do it from Kate's back to Tokyo. >>;

Not all doujinshi is smutty, some is just drawn slash fan-fic so you might enjoy the boy band ones. I'm personally looking for Geass smut of the uke Suzaku variety. I need to go super early cause I adore Kashi and they're huge.
