Wheeeee, time for another poll. For those who don't know, I 1) Am not going to have long in Japan this next trip cause I want to be in Tokyo on 10/10 but need to come home 10/12 for Yom Kippur, and 2) I've also decided despite not hearing back from Volks yet, to go to Kansai first, so at the very least I can see some good friends. ^^ The problem with Kansai (KIX Airport) is there are no direct flights from NY, so... hence the poll.

To give a little more info, all flights are on the same airline. The 7 am ORD flight is 90% on time and the 8 am is 80% according to the website. There is only one flight a day to KIX. ORD gets quite a few flights from NY and is only about 2 1/2 hours away. To catch the 7 am flight I need to leave my home by 5:30 am and to catch the 8 am I need to leave by 6:30 am.

Well, I'm also jealous, but the more important thing is to allow yourself enough time, then you can go wait for the next flight and sleep. :D

I'm restless in airports, so I picked two. And checking in at LAX, which is hell on earth has never taken me more than 30 minutes. I always ended up with too much time and nothing to do, so I started just arriving later.

If you're going through O'Hare, I'd advise erring on too much time. >>; Last time I went home to Chicago a rainstorm (really, just rain) delayed me at least an hour. -_-;

It helps I got a new job, which makes going to Japan much easier financially. (Though of course not time-wise.)

I have gotten better at sleeping on planes, it's more I hate waiting for my flights to take off. When flying direct to NRT from JFK, I usually end up waiting 2 hours at JFK. -.- Though now I have a laptop and I found where a plug is. lol

I should mention that thanks to all my flying I have elite status on my airline, so I get to wait in Business Class lines, which does speed things up some. ^^

Awwwww but you're a homeowner now, which is so cool! It still freaks me out sometimes that we have 30 more years before we own this place free and clear. ^^;;

I too am restless at airports, and depending on the airport there is nothing to do. When shops are open, LGA is actually nice, but JFK where I usually fly in and out of... -.- I'm flying JFK-LAX with a few hour stopover and then LAX-St. George, Utah in Sept. -.-;

I'm not so worried about check-in since I have elite status on my airline so get to wait on the shorter Business Class lines, I'm more worried about them getting my luggage onto the new flight.

I generally hate transfers, but I have no choice for this one cause I want to go to KIX.

Really? I don't know Chicago that well. The last time I flew in/out I nearly missed my flight, but because I have elite status they still let me board. lol i'm more concerned about my flight leaving here for Chicago. If once I get to Chicago my KIX flight is delayed, well... it just means my friend who might meet me at the airport wouldn't need to take any time off from work.

I really need to know about this since I plan to do this route in December also prob. Well unless the flight to KIX is cheaper through a CA airport.

I'd advise taking the earlier flight. That way, if there is a delay, you have some coverage. (ORD is famous for their delays).

And yes, am very jealous about you getting to go to Japan yet again! ;-D

Hey, if I send you the money, would you be willing to look for/pick up a couple of Takarazuka DVDs for me? It's hard to find places that will ship them to America...

Yeah, I actually think most planes to Japan go through O'Hare. I've been flying in and out of there my whole life! ^^; It's a really busy airport, and very big, so I'd definitely advise extra time! It can't hurt - there's plenty of stuff to look at so hopefully if you don't need it you won't be bored! ~_^

Delays of flights getting in, or flights leaving?

And yes, of course I would be willing to bring you back DVDs just 2 caveats 1) You do know Japanese DVDs are code 2 so you need either a code 2 or region free DVD player to watch them and 2) You do know DVDs in Japan are typically really expensive, much more so than US ones.

So long as you go along with the caveats, just tell me where they sell them lol I do know what Takarazuka is, Takara even made a special Takarazuka doll a bunch of years ago, lol But I don't know where the DVDs are sold. Are they a speciality item, or do they carry them in more typical venues like HMV?

Well, going to NRT, I can fly direct from NY. NY just doesn't have direct to KIX, could be because it's already 14 hours to NRT and going to KIX would add almost another hour.

I know there are flights through San Fran and LAX cause I once did JFK-NRT trip by train to Kyoto and then flew KIX-SFO-NY. I confess, I would rather transfer going to Japan since no need to do customs.

Ohh so ORD has nice shops? Any place selling decent food to eat? Airplane vegetarian sucks and I like trying to bring sandwiches. Is ORD all one huge terminal where you can get everywhere by walking? Or is it the satalite system, with lots of little tiny buildings? Or is it like Denver, where most flights by a particular line are together but to get between lines you need to take their little air train? (I think Orlando is like that too)

Ah, okay, that's cool! I didn't know you could do direct from NY and get to Japan at all! ^^; But yeah, ORD does have a whole bunch of shops. I've been in the international terminal once (meeting people on their way to Japan, actually!) and it seemed nice and big and full of shops to me! It's... kind of one big airport, though you have to go through some long halls to get to other terminals. And I'm not quite as sure about the international terminal, but there is a train-thing if you wanted to get from there to the rest of the airport. Aaand... I do believe there should be some decent places to get veggie options! But I'm sure you could doule-check that online.

Ohhhhh... Actually, I prefer one large area with lots of wings sticking out, the satalite system is the worst. I would hate to have to get from one terminal to another at JFK. (though they finally put in an air train, but it's still a pain and you have to actually leave the terminal!

The international at JFK is very meh. There is one duty-free, one educational toys, one newstand, and that is about it! o_O The food court is a McD, a bad sandwich place, and a bad pizza place, and that is it. ;;_;; LGA has Au Bon Pain!

But yeah there are a ton of flights from JFK to NRT and back. I know UA, ANA, AA, and NW all have a direct and I think CO has one from Newark. Coming back from Japan, I will have a direct, since I am flying NRT-JFK on the flight I almost always take back. ^_^ It's nice because it leaves at 5ish, so I have a few hours of shopping in the morning I cna squeeze in XD;

As a former resident of the Midwest who flew through O'Hare a lot, there is one tenet you must always follow: Get into O'Hare as early as possible, because after 9 am, the control tower will have managed to screw up the time schedules for the entire country.

The problem is my flight to KIX leaves about noon, I have a feeling that flight generally is more reliable than a domestic flight just because it's going so far, and probably it doesn't get cancelled often. (hopefully) Since it's close to double the price to connect through LAX/SFO

Yeah, the satellite system definitely sucks. O'Hare's kind of this hybrid of both... I think the international terminal's the farthest from the middle, is all. <<;

I think the O'Hare international terminal should definitely have more stuff than that! I remember it being pretty big with lots of stores and things. ::nods:: Au Bon Pain, though~! Sounds nice.

Aha, and yay for direct flights! Those are indeed the best. And I like flights that leave not too early when going back. ::nods:: Those last couple of hours for shopping are crucial! XD

Hmmmm, I will have to see if I can pull up a map on-line. It's good though because there is a flight to Chicago nearly every hour from LGA. I guess Chicago is a popular destination and hub.

As long as you don't have to actually go outside and leave the terminal, I am happy. lol

Generally, I spend my last day in Tokyo packing and sending out boxes lol Though I have gotten much better at packing now. But those last few hours are crucial! I once had to be back for a Bar Mitzvah on Sat, but the Doll Show was on Friday, so I checked out early, left my luggage in a locker at Tokyo Station, went to the show, made sure to leave by 12:30, caught a 1 pm NEX to NRT, and had no problem making my 5 pm flight, and got back to JFK 4pm on Friday. lol (and people say you can't time travel XD;;; )

Heh. I suck at packing - it takes me so long! I have no spatial skills whatsoever so I never know how to pack well. Sounds like you've totally got a system down though! XD
