Grrrrrr

Yesterday when walking to get the mail from our central mail drop off area I encountered a sign offering two cats to a good home because their owners were having a second child. This just left me livid. I like kids, I think it's great if people want to have them, heck, look at me! But when you take on the responsibility of caring for an animal you can't just dump that animal when it becomes "inconvenient." I adore Ryuchan, but there is no way I'm giving up Cookie or Basil just "because I'm pregnant." Not only do I love them and they love me, but I have a responsibility to take care of them.

Ugh. Some people...

I hope those cats will find a good home, or at least a no-kill shelter that can take them in. :( Our neighbor ended up taking one of the (extremely elderly!) local stray/feral cats to Kitty Harbor, where he spent his last few months in a foster home.

I hate this so much! If your pets are not members of your family, what the hell is wrong with you? you shouldn't have them!

edit: >__> Sorry, Rachel's layout strikes again. I have this problem on anyone else's LJ, really!

THIS. I've seen that happen before and it pisses me off beyond words. I'm not saying animals are the equal of humans, but they are part of the family.

(It also breaks my heart when people have to give up pets due to foreclosure, but at least I can understand that, as a lot of rental places don't allow pets.)

Ohhhh, that shit pisses me off so bad. Don't get a freaking animal if you don't want to care for it no matter what. An animal is part of the family, you can't get rid of a first child if you have a second right...it shouldn't be any different with a pet...

I hope those cats find a good home too. If I wasn't so worried about how it might affect my cats I would consider taking them in. I love having a calico.

It just makes me so sad because those cats have probably grown to love that family and it just seems so cruel to just get rid of them

Sorry about the layout. >>;

Even if you don't want to think of them as a member of your family, once you take on a pet they are your responsibility and you owe it to the animal do your best for them.

This is not to me about animals being equal to people, but I think any animals we adopt become our responsibility and it is selfish and cruel not to take the responsibility seriously. I love Ryuchan to pieces, but this does not negate the fact that I also love Cookie and Basil. They've been with me so long and are an important part of my life as well.

One thing to note is a lot of rentals will make an exception for cats. Dogs are a lot harder (because of noise issues and because dogs can more seriously hurt humans.) I know a few places I looked at officially said no cats but were willing to allow them. I think technically the place we are renting now was one of them.

Yeah, I just don't really understand it. Even if you don't want to see a pet as a family member or the equivalent of a child it's still a huge responsibility that you need to take seriously and not just dump.

Yeah...it's like, what made them want a pet in the first place if they weren't willing to make a lifetime commitment to the pet.

GRRRR indeed. :E I don't expect everyone to accept their pets as family, but surely they must at least be friends. One does not get rid of ones friends merely because a higher priority comes along.
