I am supposed to meet someone on Friday in Japan who seems super nice but is under the assumption her US cell phone will just work in Japan and that I will be able to just "text her" with my Japanese cell phone. which ee970 says is impossible.

She wants to just meet at Namba Station rather than my two actual suggestions of OCAT since that is where I will arrive or a Starbucks near Takashimaya I sent her a map of.

This so spells DOOM.

I guess at least we will definitely meet on Saturday at the cruise... assuming she can get from Osaka to Kobe....

Make TRIPLE sure she knows the addresses of places, and maps. That's the exact situation we ended up in (Namba, natch, the place is a maze), and someone didn't have the address of the hostel we were waiting in ;) And there, we had extenuating circumstances of her being told by her phone provider that her phone would work in 3g.

Mind you, if your acquaintance's US cell phone is a 3g one (such as an iPhone 3G, and most new Nokias, SonyEricssons and Samsungs), it will work in Japan. You can text it the same way as any other phone, just put the country code first (as you would if her phone were still in the US).

The problem is I have no idea where she wants to meet. Her last message to me was just let's meet at Namba. ~.~ I've of course been to Namba many many times but it's a huge station and you can't just meet at it which is why I offered OCAT (since that is where I am arriving and cause it is easy to find since it is above JR Namba, and most people can direct you to one or the other or both) or a very specific Starbucks near the Namba Takashimaya.

She left for Japan without contacting me and she wants to meet Friday, the day I arrive. I've never met her before so it's not like we know one another well or even what the other looks like well.

It just bugs me that she spent forever getting info on the stores she wants to shop in and couldn't find out for sure if her cell phone will even work. ~.~ I suspect it will not since she doesn't seem aware of the issues.

I'm not sure my cell phone will let me text international numbers like that and even if it does it is going to cost me a lot. I'm pretty sure my cell phone does not have a long distance plan. I've never successfully texted a US # from Japan on any of my rentals and I did once try before. I don't think she is quite aware since she never even mentioned country codes. ~.~

This is just going to be a mess. At least assuming she can make it to Kobe I will see her on Saturday at the very least and we can arrange Sunday then. *sighs*
