Interesting...
Feb. 13th, 2009 06:48 pmWorking on this trip to Japan has reminded me of why I dislike Kyoto, particularly in March. Every time I plan a March trip to Japan I always forget the end of March is a vacation time for the Japanese and Kyoto is an extremely popular tourist destination. I really wish I knew when the Sato event was, because I would be tempted to say screw Kyoto I'm going to Kanazawa instead or Okayama or somewhere else for some of that time. But I still don't know if it is Friday or Saturday or if this year Sato isn't even having one! I wish Volks cared to share with the class their plans. Maybe I will email just so I can share the extremely unhelpful response I get. *sighs*
So, I can get a hotel I like easily on Sun, Mon and Tues nights. I can spend Wed night and Thurs night back in Tokyo. (Thurs night I had to go back to Tokyo anyway!) I can find someplace Thurs night in Kyoto... the problem is Friday and Saturday and Saturday in particular. However, after trying to get a Japanese website to work and getting rejected by Asiarooms I've made a startling realization, I can pay 3000 yen more for 2 nights and stay in a semi-double room in the hotel I want. I hate the fact I will be in total paying $70 more, but considering a lot of the hotels I was considering changed rates depending on the week day and this one is 8000 yen each night it could be worse. So I could get 8000 yen for Thurs, Sun, Mon and Tues nights and on Fri+Sat pay 11,000 yen. I wouldn't have to move all over Kyoto and could just leave my suitcases at the hotel's left luggage while I go out for the day, heck if they're anything like the Grand City, they might even be willing to move my luggage for me! The only other hotel I found with definite rooms is a 10 min walk from Inari station. (vs this hotel which is like a 8 min walk from Kyoto Station and has an onsen on the top floor!) A 10 min walk to Inari is less than appealing, particularly when I then need to catch a train and then transfer when going to Sato vs. a 8 min walk to Kyoto eki where I then just need to catch a train.
I wish I knew where in the heck Kyoto Dolpa was....
Blargh I need to decide this soon and book Tokyo as well. At least The website I am using won't charge cancellation fees unless it is under 5 days before the trip!

Date: 2009-02-14 01:17 am (UTC)I'm 99% sure it is that week end, but if I knew it was say Saturday I would look into spending Thurs night somewhere not Kyoto, like say Nagoya or Kanazawa or somewhere not Kyoto. :P
March is when the school holidays are so a lot of the cheaper singles get booked by recent grads taking a much needed break before college. If I were trying for a double getting a hotel would be no problem, it's trying to get a single that is not so fun.
