A distant part of Suzaku knew this was only a partial memory in the form of a dream and it couldn't actually hurt him. But his heart still seized up as he stared at his former best friend beneath the cracked mask, his gun dropping from his hand and clattering against the stone floor in the silence. Lelouch merely smirked before pointing his own gun towards Suzaku and firing, a further betrayal as the teen closed his eyes expecting to feel the bullet piercing him. Instead all he felt was warm blood splattering his face and soaking into his clothes, the merest whisper of soft hair against his cheeks as his eyes opened in horror to see Euphie crumpling against him. Gently tilting her head to smile up at him with glazed eyes and a hysterical smile, she giggled as her blood further stained his formerly white uniform. Suzaku stared at her with dawning horror as Euphie asked if everyone was happy. Heart breaking, Suzaku clutched desperately at his former princesses' failing body as it transformed into feathers, blinding him as they drifted through his fingers and vanished like his goal of a free and peaceful Japan. Soundless tears dripped from his eyes as he forced his gaze back to the cause of his misery, who looked on proudly at the devastation he'd wrought.
"It was always me, Suzaku." Lelouch took aim to shoot again.
Waking in a cold sweat the gentle pressure on his arm caused a sharp intake of breath by the teen as he tried to suppress a yelp his nightmare still too close for any rationality. Twisting in the grasp, Suzaku moved to to try to defend against his attacker before being temporarily blinded by a light switching on.
"Suzaku? It's me."
A pair of cornflower eyes stared worriedly into his own, as Suzaku felt a blush color his cheeks before scowling as he propped himself up and buried his face in one of his hands ignoring the fact Gino was still holding his wrist.
"You're lucky my reflexes are so good, " the blond smiled affably as he moved to sit down on the bed next to Suzaku. "You nearly needed to take me to the emergency room, Suzaku."
"Sorry, Gino-san" mumbled Suzaku. It had been nearly a week since Gino had appeared at Suzaku's apartment carrying a small duffle bag and a kicked puppy look. Pouting he'd explained how the kitchen plumbing had somehow gotten ruined in his apartment and he needed a place to stay while repairs were carried out. Suzaku strongly suspected said plumbing "accident" had been caused by Gino's insistence that the kitchen drain was actually a garbage disposal despite all the evidence to the contrary. Frowning, Suzaku had wanted to just shut the door on Gino, but the taller man just looked so pathetic that Suzaku found himself agreeing to the arrangement despite any reservations.
"Were you having a nightmare?"
"No."
Gino raised an eyebrow and gave the boy a look of amusement. "Want a cup of warm milk, my mother use to always make it for me when I had a nightmare. Or do you prefer tea?"
"I told you, I was not having one, Gino-san."
Nodding in agreement, Gino just smirked, before poking Suzaku in the side. "Tea it is then."
Sighing Suzaku watched as the blond stood and left the room. "Just remember, I don't own a garbage disposal!" grumbled the brunette at the retreating form. Rubbing his temples, Suzaku's grimace only deepened. It had been nearly two weeks since his last nightmare rather than the almost nightly occurrence since they started close to one year ago. A part of Suzaku thought the Emperor had been surprisingly merciful to his rebellious son and half wished his memories could be altered so they wouldn't keep haunting his dreams and he could exorcise all his demons. But someone had to bear witness and he owed it to Euphie not to forget and he deserved the pain for letting his feelings towards Lelouch blind him to the other's true intentions. He'd managed to keep the truth from Nunnally, wanting to protect her from knowing just how callous her beloved older brother was and so pretended that he along with the rest of her surviving family was searching Japan for Lelouch so that he too could share in the triumphant homecoming.
"I made a pot of green, I forgot if you take sugar or cream with that" a chagrined Gino smiled as he set a tray down on the small nearly empty night stand before dropping to his knees as the teen swung his legs around to sit on the edge of the mattress, the sheets a tangled mess.
"No one drinks green tea with sugar."
"I do." Gino added a spoonful to the cup Suzaku had poured for him while watching the boy pour his own, before adding a second spoonful. "It's too bitter otherwise."
"Not all green tea tastes the same, Gino-san."
"Teach me about it, Suzaku." The blond rested his hand on Suzaku's knee as he looked up with pleading eyes. "I like when you share things with me."
Suzaku took another sip from his cup.
"What was your nightmare-- I mean your dream about Suzaku?"
"Did I wake you, Gino-san?"
Squirming, the taller man adjusted his long legs beneath him scooting closer to the teen, his hand still remaining on Suzaku's knee. "Nah, I was up already, maybe I have dreams of my own," Gino waggled his eyebrows predatorily. "So what was your nightmare about?"
Rolling his eyes, Suzaku ignored Gino's question, watching the steam drift towards the ceiling in the comparatively pallid light of his desk lamp and trying to let the heat of the tea cup soak into his still clammy skin.
Grinning, Gino set his half-finished tea on the stand before reaching toward the light. Quickly flicking the switch he caused the smaller boy's eyes to widen and blink in confusion at the sudden change before Gino reached behind himself to grasp something Suzaku hadn't noticed in his earlier reverie.
"If you can't tell me, maybe you can tell it to Mr. Frog!" Smile brightening, Gino lifted up a large plush frog which he jiggled. Both were barely visible in the soft glow of the city's neon lights drifting through one of the heavy curtains of Suzaku's bedroom.
Eyes becoming even comically larger Suzaku forgot for several moments to frown as his cheeks burned. "You own a stuffed animal, Gino-san?!?!" stuttered the boy in shock.
"Not any stuffed animal, this is Mr. Frog!" Proudly, Gino balanced the toy on his head. "And he's really good at listening, you wouldn't believe all the things I've told him."
"I'm not telling my nightmare to a stuffed frog!"
"I promise, I won't tell anyone, and neither will Mr. Frog. And with the lights out, you can pretend it's just you two so you have an easier time sharing confidences."
""I'm not telling my nightmare to a stuffed frog no matter what the light level!" Suzaku glared furiously, his shoulders shaking ever so slightly.
"Why not, Suzaku? You need to share it with someone and if you won't share it with me..." gently, Gino removed the animal from his head and placed it in Suzaku's lap his expression surprisingly serious. "We want to be your friend, Suzaku."
Two large hands cupped Suzaku's own, transferring their warmth more successfully than the tea.
"I don't need friends."
"Yes, you do. Both Anya and I have been trying to let you know that for months, or well I have, Anya thought if we gave you enough time you'd realize on your own." Belying his obvious strength, Gino gave Suzaku's hands a gentle squeeze. "You're just really stubborn. Please Suzaku, let me in."
Sighing, Suzaku allowed the taller man to open his hands and place his remaining tea on the tray next to his own cup. Hoping the darkness effectively hid the blush on his cheeks the teen lifted the frog and stared at it, unsure where to begin or if he could even speak the words after so long. "I.. it was about the past.
Gino nodded, holding Suzaku's hands in his own to give what limited comfort he could. "It must have been hard, seeing Japan defeated and conquered."
"It was," stumbled Suzaku his brows furrowing for a second, knuckles whitening as he clasped the toy tighter. "But this..I had a friend, a precious friend and he.. he destroyed everything for revenge. He even sacrificed his own family, he sacrificed.."
"I won't betray you, Suzaku, and Anya wouldn't either."
"It just..it stills hurts."
"And it will, but you have us now."
"Thank you, Gino."
"See, I told you talking to Mr. Frog would help," The blond grinned purposely not mentioning that for the first time Suzaku had not used an honorific with him. "He's also really good to sleep with and keeps bad dreams away."
"And who then will keep your bad dreams away?" questioned Suzaku skeptically, raising an eyebrow at the other man.
"Knowing you're sleeping peacefully is enough for me."
"Gino," Suzaku sighed, "I'm not sleeping with your stuffed frog."
"Well, then I do have another idea..." Not waiting for the teen to respond Gino rushed forward knocking the boy flat onto the bed, before wrapping an arm around Suzaku's body and adjusting them both against the pillows holding onto Suzaku nearly as tightly as the other was holding Mr. Frog.
"Gino!" sputtered Suzaku. "What the hell are you doing?"
"Having another person keep you company also helps with nightmares. Didn't you ever sneak into your parents bed at night after something scary happened?"
"My mother died when I was 3 and my father slept on a futon."
"Same difference," huffed Gino, running his fingers through Suzaku's hair soothingly listening to the sound of the boy's breathing evening again, Mr. Frog pressed safely between their bodies. "I can be just like a huge stuffed animal for you since Arthur has been sleeping with Anya."
Shrewdly, Suzaku tilted his head to try to look Gino in the face. "And what about when your plumbing is fixed?"
"Oh, it was fixed yesterday, I just wanted to stay with you longer."
"Gino!" fumed the smaller boy, "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Would you have let me stay?"
"I'm thinking of kicking you out right now, Gino."
Suzaku felt the vibrations of the larger man chuckling against him, before Gino returned to his consoling petting, giving the still annoyed teen a lopsided smile. "I want to stay here with you, Suzaku and protect you from any more bad dreams and memories. I want to be the one to bring back your smile, your true smile."
"I'm not 5, and I don't need a roommate underfoot, particularly not one who damaged the plumbing in his own apartment 4 times in the last 6 months. I'm surprised you didn't burn the water making tea."
"Anya promised not to tell anyone about that time!" exclaimed the blond plaintively, his smile still visible in the darkness.
"She didn't, Gino, it was just a lucky guess."
"I could be your boyfriend."
"Stop teasing, Gino."
"I'm not teasing," smirked the blond, eyes twinkling. "Don't you want to be mine?"
"No," Suzaku yawned closing his eyes. "I'm too tired for your pestering, Gino and we have training exercises in a few hours."
"I'd like to be yours."
Taking a deep breath, Suzaku half ignored what the blond man was saying needing to get more sleep. "Stop it," he mumbled.
"That's O.K., I can be patient." Expression softening, the taller man brushed several heavy locks of hair from the teen's forehead, watching as his breathing deepened as Suzaku drifted back to sleep. Leaning down, Gino placed a kiss on the now bared skin. "Very patient."
